Colonials tied with George Mason after one day
GENEVA, Ohio - George Washington men's swimming and diving kicked off its quest for a fourth straight conference title Wednesday with a pair of strong relay efforts.
The Colonials earned gold in the 800-yard freestyle relay and silver in the 200-yard medley relay on the first day of the Atlantic 10 Championships at SPIRE Institute.
With three days to go, GW is tied atop the team standings with George Mason. Both clubs have 74 points with La Salle (62) and Massachusetts (56) next in line.
In the final race of the night, GW charged to gold in the 800 free relay with Moritz Fath, Youssef Ragab, Tyler Kawakami and Haoning Chen finishing more than two seconds clear of the field in 6:30.20. The Colonials led wire-to-wire thanks to Fath's strong opening leg (1:36.32).
Kawakami and Chen were also part of GW's second-place effort in the 200 medley relay, teaming with Andrew Cho and George Aspougalis to touch in 1:27.95.
UP NEXT: The A-10 Championships continue Thursday with preliminary racing for the first individual swimming events starting at 10 a.m. followed by finals at 6:30 p.m. The full schedule for the four-day meet is available here.
