Colonials secured 200 medley relay gold Wednesday
GENEVA, Ohio - George Washington women's swimming and diving sits atop the standings after a strong opening night at the Atlantic 10 Championships.
Highlighted by a gold-medal swim in the 200-yard medley relay, the Colonials totaled 106 points Wednesday evening to take the lead ahead of Duquesne (94), Massachusetts (77) and Richmond (73) with three days to go at SPIRE Institute.
In the meet's first final, Andrea Ho, Stine Omdahl Petersen, Meghan Burton and Rebecca Smolcic broke a program record they set earlier this season in the 200 medley relay by touching in 1:39.49. The team's winning time was also a pool record and just one-hundredth of a second off a conference mark.
In the evening's other swimming event, the Colonials landed fourth in the 800-yard freestyle relay with Gemma Atherley, Grace Olivardia, Andrea Moussier and Jackie Torrez finishing in 1:49.23. Atherley's blistering opening leg of 1:48.00 was a personal-best for the 200 free.
GW's divers secured some important points with Caitlin Inall, Rachel Dickinson and Gabriella Arendes qualifying for the A final and finishing sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively. All three Colonials posted season-high scores during the preliminary round to advance to the night session (Arendes - 247.95, Inall - 247.75, Dickinson - 237.75).
UP NEXT: The individual swimming events begin Thursday at the A-10 Championships with preliminary races beginning at 10 a.m. and finals at 6:30 p.m. The full schedule for the meet is available here.
