Meghan Burton earned two medals Thursday
GENEVA, Ohio - George Washington women's swimming and diving leaned on its depth Thursday to grow its lead at the Atlantic 10 Championships.
Over three individual events, the Colonials advanced 11 different swimmers to finals with five of them in championship races. Meghan Burton led the way by earning silver in the 50-yard freestyle and also swimming a sizzling leadoff leg on GW's record-breaking 200-yard freestyle relay.
Thanks to those efforts, the Colonials have accumulated 251 points to outpace Duquesne (199), Fordham (194) and Davidson (156) in the team standings with two days to go at SPIRE Institute.
Burton paced four Colonials in the top 10 of the 50 free, touching in a personal-best time of 23.15 seconds. Grace Olivardia was fourth (:23.29), while Becca Brown (:23.37) and Rebecca Smolcic (:23.43) went 1-2 in the B final.
To close the night, those four sprinters combined on an electric swim in the 200 free relay. The Colonials touched in 1:31.42 to eclipse the previous A-10 record and set a new program mark, but they settled for silver behind Fordham's 1:30.84.
Jackie Torrez led the Buff and Blue in the 200 IM, taking fourth with a finals time of 2:00.15 to set a career best and narrowly miss out on a program record. First-year Stine Omdahl Peterson won the B final in a personal-best time of 2:01.35 that ranks third on GW's all-time top 10. Courtney Sicinski was 14th there, as well.
Andrea Moussier closed the 500-yard freestyle strong for a fourth-place finish in 4:54.71. Gemma Atherley qualified for the A final and took eighth, while Tali Lemcoff turned in an impressive swim in the B final to take 10th (4:56.44) and Erin McCarthy landed 14th.
