Solt shines in Buff & Blue debut
THIBODAUX, La. - GW baseball fell in an old-fashioned pitchers' duel on Saturday afternoon, 1-0, to SIUE in game two of the Baseball on the Bayou Classic, hosted by Nicholls State.
Junior starter Justin Solt, making his GW debut, authored the second straight quality start for a Colonial hurler to begin the year, yielding just a run on five hits in 6.1 frames while striking out four without a walk.
He was dealt the tough-luck loss with SIUE pushing across the game's lone run in the home half of the third on a hit by pitch, sac bunt and RBI single.
Sophomore Chris Knight and junior Trevor Kuncl combined to hold the Cougars hitless over the final 1.2 innings with strikeouts accounting for four of the final five outs.
Redshirt sophomore Derek Ripp provided two of GW's three hits on the day, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. Senior Steve Barmakian had the final knock of the day with a single in the sixth as SIUE retired the final nine Colonials in order.
The same two teams square off on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. to wrap up the weekend.
