Men's Basketball Hosts Coppin St. Saturday
12/4/2020 11:28:00 AM | Men's Basketball
Looking to notch its first win of the season, GW men's basketball will try its hand against Coppin State on Saturday, with the Eagles coming in with a lone loss this season at the hands of then-No. 9 Duke. Coppin State outscored the Blue Devils 43-36 in the second half of that game before ultimately falling by 10. Led by Baltimore legend and former Washington Wizard Juan Dixon, Coppin put four in double-figures in their opener, paced by Dejuan Clayton and Anthony Tarke's matching 22.
GW'S LAST TIME OUT
Sophomore transfer James Bishop notched a career-high 22 points, with Matt Moyer (15), Jameer Nelson Jr. (14) and Jamison Battle (11) not far behind, but it wasn't enough to overcome a feisty Hampton Pirates club playing its first game of the season.
FIRST-YEAR SPARK
First-years Tyler Brelsford and Lincoln Ball provided a spark late in the first half of Tuesday's home opener, with both notching their first college buckets just before halftime by attacking the rim. Fellow frosh Noel Brown got into the scoring column in GW's opener at Navy, portending a bright future for the all-DMV class of first-years.
THE BISHOP'S GAMBIT
Bishop's transfer to GW has paid immediate dividends, in the form of back-to-back career-best scoring totals. After wrapping his freshman campaign at LSU with a single-game career high of 11 points, Bishop has topped the mark twice in his first two games in the Buff and Blue, first with 20 points at Navy then with a double deuce against Hampton. Through two games, Bishop is playing like an All-Conference guard, with averages of 21.0 points and 8.0 assists per game, with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.67-to-1.
MOYER'S MARK
Moyer made himself at home in his first-ever game at the Smith Center on Tuesday after transferring from Vanderbilt as a grad student in the offseason. Despite the outcome, Moyer made his presence felt in an efficient performance. He finished just three points shy of his career-high in points, and netted his 15 on just eight shots from the field. An aggressive style on the offensive end led to a career-high seven free throw attempts.
TIME TO START A NEW BATTLE
For the first time in his career, sophomore marksman Jamison Battle was held without a made 3-pointer on Tuesday against Hampton. Last year's A-10 leader in made 3s with 89 had hit at least one 3-pointer in all 33 games in his career, a streak that stood as the sixth-longest in the country … until Tuesday. Time to start a new streak.
