12/5/2020 4:52:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Hungry for a win after coming close in its first two contests, an inspired GW squad came out energetic and flying against the Coppin St. Eagles on Saturday afternoon at the Smith Center in downtown Washington, D.C.
By halftime seven on the Buff and Blue side had reached the scoring column and GW had put 42 points on the board, a number only limited by 13 first-half turnovers. GW shot .517 from the field in the first, led by sophomore James Bishop's 5-of-6 shooting show. The Baltimore product also had the double-double watch going early, seeking the first of his career, with five first-half assists to go with his 12 points, as his club took a 42-33 advantage into the halftime break.
Before Bishop could notch a double-double, three of his teammates beat him to it as Matt Moyer, Chase Paar and Jamison Battle dominated inside. Moyer notched his first double-double since the 2017-18 season at Syracuse with his career-high 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Paar flashed the promise of his first-year campaign with a career-high 15-points, and career-high tying 16-rebound effort in his third game of his sophomore season. Battle got into the act with 14 points and 13 rebounds of his own.
As for Bishop, he fell just an assist shy of a double-double, but nevertheless racked up another monster stat line in his third game at GW. With 20 points he's now gone for 20+ in all three games and his nine assists extended his A-10 leading total. For good measure, Bishop pulled down a career-high eight rebounds in what was a day full of highs for the home team. With his starting teammates all putting up numbers offensively, Jameer Nelson Jr. reminded people that he was the conference's sixth-leading swipes man a year ago. Nelson's career-high six steals showed what's possible in Head Coach Jamion Christian's MAYHEM system.
A schedule adjustment will now take GW to UMBC next game rather than Towson. Tip-time on Monday at the home of the Retrievers is 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
