Men’s Basketball Hits the Road for UMBC Monday
12/6/2020 3:40:00 PM | Men's Basketball
The GW men's basketball team will play its second road game of the season, once again visiting the state of Maryland, when it travels to UMBC Monday for a 4 p.m. tip on America East TV. GW will be looking for back-to-back wins after an action-packed thriller at Smith Center on Saturday, and is seeking its first road win of the season after a tight loss to Navy in the season opener. The Retrievers come into Monday's action at 1-1, and are led in part by the son of a GW legend, Darnell Rogers, whose father Shawnta was a national sensation during his time in Foggy Bottom and is currently a GW Hall of Famer and an all-time fan favorite.
LAST TIME OUT
Hungry for a win after coming close in its first two contests, an inspired GW squad came out energetic and flying against the Coppin State Eagles on Saturday. By halftime, seven on the Buff and Blue side had reached the scoring column, and GW had put 42 points on the board, a number only limited by 13 first-half turnovers. Matt Moyer, Chase Paar and Jamison Battle dominated inside, with Moyer notching his first double-double since the 2017-18 season at Syracuse with his career-high 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Paar flashed the promise of his first-year campaign with a career-high 15 points and a career-high tying 16 rebounds. Battle got into the act with 14 points and 13 rebounds of his own.
LEADING THE WAY
James Bishop is currently leading the A-10 in assists per game with 8.3 helpers per contest and ranks second in scoring (20.7 ppg). Bishop's two nine-assist games this season rank at the top of the A-10's single-game high assist list this season. The sophomore transfer standout has notched 20+ points in all three games he's logged for the Buff and Blue, and also had a career-high eight rebounds last game.
BOARD MEN
After a monster team rebounding effort against Coppin State, Battle (9.7 rpg) is now tied for second in the A-10 in rebounds per game, while Moyer (9.3 rpg) ranks fourth and Chase Paar (9.0 rpg) is tied for fifth. Paar's 16 boards are a conference single-game high so far this season, while Battle's 13 rebounds against the Eagles rank second.
NOT A ONE-TRICK PONY
Battle also ranks 15th in the conference in points per game (15.0), making him one of just six players in the A-10 ranked in the top 15 in both points and rebounds per game (Jordan Miller, George Mason; Ibi Watson, Dayton; Kellan Grady, Davidson; Taylor Funk, SJU; Ryan Daly, SJU). Last year's A-10 leader in three-point field goals made is showing off a multi-faceted game as a sophomore.
A STICKY BANDIT
After Jameer Nelson Jr.'s career-high six-steal game against Coppin State, the sticky-fingered sophomore now ranks second in the conference with 3.3 steals per game after finishing sixth in the conference a season ago in steals per game as a true freshman. His steal tally is the highest in the A-10 for any single game in this young season.
YOUNG LEGS
Battle (36.7 mpg – 3rd in A-10), Bishop (34.7 mpg – 8th) and Nelson (30.0 mpg – 16th) are three of just 16 players league-wide who average 30+ minutes per game. Given the pace of play preferred by Head Coach Jamion Christian in his MAYHEM system, the Buff and Blue will look to gradually get more minutes for the supporting cast, including first-years Noel Brown, Lincoln Ball and Tyler Brelsford. Brown logged a season-high 12 minutes Saturday.
