Men's Basketball Falls to Hampton in Home Opener, 82-78
12/1/2020 11:56:00 PM | Men's Basketball
In an odd setting due to pandemic restrictions in Washington, D.C., GW men's basketball hosted Hampton in a fanless environment on Tuesday night at the Charles E. Smith Center.
Sophomore transfer James Bishop showed once again that he likes the feel of wearing Buff and Blue. After notching a career-high 20 points in the season opener at Navy, he outdid himself in the home opener with a new high mark of 22.
GW put four in double figures, paced by Bishop, with Matt Moyer (15), Jameer Nelson Jr. (14) and Jamison Battle (11) not far behind, but it wasn't enough to overcome a feisty Pirates club playing its first game of the season.
First-years Tyler Brelsford and Lincoln Ball provided a spark late in the first half, with both notching their first college buckets, before GW went into the break trailing, 37-33.
Neither team led by more than 10 at any point, and after a Jamison Battle slam tied the score at 74 going into the under-4:00 timeout of the second half, GW found the iron unkind.
Uncharacteristically, GW saw its opponent shoot more 3s, as Hampton hoisted 33 from deep, connecting on 10. Comparatively, the home squad was 3-of-16 from long range. GW tried to make up the difference at the free throw line as it buried 21-of-30 freebies after attacking the basket all game, with Hampton mostly settling for jumpers and thus only trying 14 free throws, making 10. That was more than enough, however, for Hampton to claim the win.
GW's next scheduled game is a 7 p.m. tip-off at Towson on Monday, Dec. 7.
