Men's Basketball Opens Home Slate vs. Hampton Tuesday at 8pm
11/30/2020 2:46:00 PM | Men's Basketball
When GW men's basketball took the floor last Wednesday at Navy, only three Colonials who saw action in the final game of the 2019-20 campaign were a part of the club. With new faces in new places at The Veterans Classic, unsurprisingly GW got off to a slow start unbefitting of the up-tempo pace of play the Buff and Blue will prefer to play with this season. Tuesday brings new opportunity as the Hampton Pirates come to DC for their season opener and GW's first home contest of the young campaign. In the schools' first meeting since senior Maceo Jack's freshman campaign - a 65-57 GDUB win - George Washington and Hampton tip off at 8 p.m. on ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT
GW couldn't keep up with Navy's early shooting pace, as the Midshipmen sank 17-of-31 (.548) first-half field goals, including 6-of-12 from long range. James Bishop kept the Buff and Blue close early with eight points and four assists in the opening stanza, as the visitors stared down a 11-point deficit in the halftime locker room, 41-30. Jamison Battle canned 3-of-5 second-half 3-point attempts, and his 13 points in the game's final 20 minutes kept the visitors in it, but ultimately, Navy's depth was too much to overcome as nine Midshipmen logged 10+ minutes and found the scoring column. GW hoisted 29-of-52 field goals from deep.
THE BISHOP'S GAMBIT
Bishop's transfer to GW paid immediate dividends in the season opener. After wrapping his freshman campaign at LSU with career single-game highs of 11 points, four assists, one 3-point goal made and 22 minutes played set in various games, it took just one game at GW to establish new marks. Bishop debuted with a 20-point (three 3-point FGs), nine-assist effort in a team-high 36 minutes of action.
SOPHOMORE STUDS
Bishop teamed with fellow sophs Battle and Jameer Nelson Jr. to comprise the game's three leading scorers at Navy. Battle also scored 20, while Nelson was just behind with 18. All told, the trio combined for 58 points on 19-of-36 shooting (.527) and 8-of-20 from long range (.400), with 12 rebounds and 12 assists with all three logging 30+ minutes.
BATTLE TIME
Sophomore Jamison Battle made a splash as a first-year last season at GW … 89 times. Battle's 89 3-pointers topped the Atlantic 10 Conference, established a new GW single-season record for 3-pointers made and led the country in triples by a freshman. He hit at least one 3-pointer in all 32 games and finished 32nd in the country in 3s made. This season started on a similar note, with Battle's four treys in the season opener upping his streak to 33 straight games with a made 3. That streak stands as the sixth-longest in the country.
