Colonials to play 25 games, including 18 against A-10 competition
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball head coach Jennifer Rizzotti, in conjunction with the Atlantic 10, announced the program's reconfigured 2020-21 schedule on Friday, featuring 18 conference games and seven non-conference matchups.
The season kicks off on Wednesday (Nov. 25) against Division II Lincoln (Pa.), a team ranked fourth in the HBCU Women's Sports Top 10 and coming off a school-record 23 wins a year ago. GW then welcomes Old Dominion (Nov. 28), coming off a 24-win campaign, for the programs' first meeting since 2011.
December brings a pair of ACC opponents as the Buff & Blue will travel to former A-10 rival Virginia Tech (Dec. 1) to square off with the Hokies for the first time since 2012 before returning home to welcome Virginia (Dec. 6), the Hoos' first trip to D.C. since 2005.
Following a two-game road swing at CAA preseason favorite James Madison (Dec. 9) and crosstown rival Howard (Dec. 13), the Buff & Blue wrap up the non-conference slate with a home contest against Delaware (Dec. 20).
Atlantic 10 play consists of 18 games for the first time in league history and features travel partners with two games per weekend. The Colonials will play home-and-home series against Davidson, Fordham, Richmond, VCU and George Mason. Additionally, GW will welcome Saint Louis, Dayton, Duquesne and St. Bonaventure to the Smith Center while visiting La Salle, Saint Joseph's, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
The A-10 slate kicks off on New Year's Day with a trip to Davidson followed by a game at Fordham (Jan. 3). Saint Louis (Jan. 8) and Dayton (Jan. 10) come to D.C. for the A-10 home-opening weekend prior to a five-game road swing.
Following seven of the first nine conference games on the road, the Buff & Blue will finish the season with seven of their final nine games at home, including a five-game homestand to round out the regular season.
---
Pursuant to the District of Columbia's COVID plan for Phases 1-3, all games contested within D.C. must be held without spectators and for broadcast only. In Phase 2, personnel allowed inside venues are limited to 50 to facilitate broadcasting, with stringent physical distancing and PPE required.
GW Athletics understands the disappointment of the loyal fans, students, friends and family of GW student-athletes who won't be able to enjoy GW basketball in-person this season. Determinations will be made on other GW sports depending on continued guidance and adherence to city protocols. Participating in fanless environments this season adheres to D.C. regulations while still allowing our student-athletes a safe environment and the opportunity to compete.
All individuals, regardless of role or function, will always wear a mask/face covering prior to entry and within the competition venue, with universal masking and physical distancing mandated inside the venue except in the competition or medical care areas.
