Colonials ink Patel and Lyu to NLIs
WASHINGTON – GW golf has added to its lineup for the 2021-22 season with Arav Patel and Luke Lyu signing NLIs to join the Colonials, Head Coach Chuck Scheinost announced Wednesday.
Â
"I'm very excited about this year's class," Scheinost said. "They are proven winners accumulating 17 combined victories over their respective junior careers. While COVID restrictions shortened Arav and Luke's tournament schedule this past year, it didn't stop them from improving."
Â
Arav Patel
East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick HS
Â
Owns eight victories across junior career…Rated among top 60 prospects in Class of 2021 by AJGA ranking…Qualified for both New Jersey Amateur and Met Open Championship in 2020 and earned win at AJGA Golf Performance Center Junior Open…Finished runner-up at Junior PGA Championship Section Qualifier and third at AJGA Junior at Knollwood in 2019…Won Greater Middlesex Conference Group IV individual title and finished runner-up at state tournament with an 18-hole score of 68 as a freshman in 2018…Member of the Honor Roll at East Brunswick High School.
Â
Scheinost on Patel: "Arav has worked extremely hard on all areas around his game this past year and it shows. He has increased his length and become a more complete player. Before COVID struck, Arav was ranked as one of the top 60 players in the 2021 class. This summer, he qualified for the New Jersey Amateur along with the prestigious Met Open Championship. He capped off the summer by winning the AJGA Golf Performance Center Junior Open."
Â
Luke Lyu
Beijing, China/IMG Academy (Fla.)
Â
Collected nine career junior victories, most recently winning Florida Junior Tour event at Cypress Creek Golf Club in 2019…Rated among top 80 prospects in his class by AJGA rankings…Tied for ninth at WMGA Metropolitan Amateur in October 2020…Also landed top-three finishes in 2019 at the FJT event at Country Club of Winter Haven and the AJGA Junior All-Star Tournament…Native of Beijing, China who studies at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.
Â
Scheinost on Lyu: "Luke was one of the top 80 players in the 2021 class before the pandemic. His last win came back in September of 2019 when he shot 66-71 to win the FJT at Cypress Creek Golf Club. Luke has a great short game, and over the past year, he has spent a lot of time improving his golf swing. Most recently, he finished T9 at the Washington Metropolitan Amateur with a great field of local college players from around the DMV."
