WASHINGTON — First-year forward Jamison Battle finished with a season-high 20 points, but the GW men's basketball team dropped its Atlantic 10 opener to St. Bonaventure, 71-66, on Sunday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Center.
Battle was one of four Colonials to finish in double figures with Amir Harris, Armel Potter and Maceo Jack contributing 11 points apiece. Harris made his first start as a Colonial and added seven rebounds, three assists and three blocks in the effort. Potter led the squad with eight assists, and Jack was the lone Colonial to play all 40 minutes.
It was an early lead for GW after Battle connected on one of his three baskets from the outside to put the hosts ahead 7-4 with 15:31 in the first. The Bonnies then used a 15-6 run to take a 26-20 lead off Bobby Planutis' layup with 5:58 remaining in the half. From that point, GW finished the half on a 10-2 spurt to take a 30-28 advantage. Harris had nine of his 11 points at the turn.
St. Bonaventure raced out of the gates quickly in the second half with a pair of 3-pointers from Kyle Lofton and Justin Winston. Lofton did most of his damage in the second half with 11 of his 17 in the final 20 minutes.
The biggest offensive adjustment made by the Bonnies in the second half was getting the ball inside to Osun Osunniyi, who entered the contest third on the team averaging just under double digits in scoring. Osunniyi tallied 15 of his 20 points in the second half, scoring 11 of those in the final 9:30 of regulation.
Trailing 51-44 with 8:26 to play, the Colonials scored eight of the next 10 points before the Bonnies returned the favor and regained a 62-54 edge at 3:37.
GW kept the deficit within single digits and almost cut the score to within a possession in the final minute after 3-point specialist Adam Mitola drilled home a bucket from the corner. Mitola had a second chance on the next drive, but his 3-ball rimmed out.
The Colonials hit the trail for a Wednesday night clash at Saint Louis (8 p.m., ESPN+, TuneIn) before returning to the Smith Center to face Duquesne next Saturday.
