ST. LOUIS — First-year forward Jamison Battle recorded his second collegiate double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, but GW men's basketball couldn't complete the late comeback in a 63-58 loss to Saint Louis on Wednesday evening in Atlantic 10 action.
Armel Potter scored all of his 17 points in the final frame with nine of those in the last 3:36 of play. Jameer Nelson Jr. chipped in 10 points and six rebounds in 38 minutes.
GW opened play with a pair of three-pointers by Nelson and Battle and led 6-2 two minutes into regulation.
Saint Louis then scored 21 of the next 22 points and led 23-7 with 12:13 left in the half. GW was held scoreless for an eight minutes span before Nelson ended the drought with a jumper in the paint at 11:00. Late in the half, the Colonials went on a 6-0 spurt to cut the deficit to single digits with rookie Chase Paar contributing four points inside the paint. Saint Louis went into the locker room leading 32-22 at the half.
GW trailed 55-45 with 5:12 remaining, but refused to go down quietly. Potter jump-started a late rally on a fast break layup with 3:36 remaining to put the Colonials within six (55-49). Later he once again drove the lane for a bucket with a minute remaining to put the difference at four, 58-54. The Colonials had a chance to steal the road win, as with six seconds left Potter hit his third layup in the game's late stages to draw within three, but Javonte Perkins hit two free throws to end the rally.
Jordan Goodwin led the Billikens with 20 points and Hasahn French had 12 points and 14 rebounds.
GW returns to the Smith Center on Saturday against Duquesne at 4 p.m.
