4OT Thriller Ignites Smith Center in 107-104 Win Over Davidson
1/29/2020 11:07:00 PM | Men's Basketball
WASHINGTON — Wednesday night at the Charles E. Smith Center in downtown, Washington DC was one of those "I was there" nights. In the anything-can-happen world of college basketball, anything and everything can and did happen when George Washington and Davidson exchanged blows for 60 minutes of non-stop fun.
The stats from the game don't do it justice, but they do tell an unforgettable story.
Four overtimes...
211 combined points...
20 lead changes...
17 ties...
159 shots...
58 three-point attempts...
Just 16 total turnovers...
No lead greater than nine...
Every GW point scored in the paint (42), at the free throw line (26), or from three (39)...
...and one unforgettable GW win for the record books, in the longest game in Smith Center history.
Some of the GW records set Tuesday night might never be challenged, namely the 58:53 of court time logged by first-year Jamison Battle in GW's first four-overtime game in over 50 years (1968).
Each side had five student-athletes hit double-figures in scoring, both with a 30-point scorer (GW's Maceo Jack - career-high 35, Davidson's Jon Axel Gudmundsson 31), a 20-point scorer (GW's Battle, Davidson's Kellan Grady), and three each with 10+.
The Colonials' first-year class of Battle, Jameer Nelson Jr., Chase Paar and Shawn Walker Jr. combined for 55 points and 34 rebounds while logging over 170 minutes of floor time, with both Paar and Nelson Jr. securing double-doubles in points and rebounds. Paar's monster 13-point and 16-rebound effort established new season-highs in both categories, backing up his effort in GW's last game against Saint Joseph's in which he recorded his first career double-double.
For all the shiny new accolades accumulated by the GW frosh, if it wasn't for the upperclassmen, the Buff and Blue wouldn't have enjoyed the wild win. Jack's career night lit the torch for GW, but it was senior big man Arnaldo Toro who landed the final heavyweight blows. Despite not checking in until overtime, Toro dominated the extra sessions. He did a night's work all after the game's first 40 minutes, finishing with 11 points and six rebounds (with five drawn fouls) in his 13:04 of duty to knock out the Wildcats.
Both sides had numerous chances to win it, with Battle nearly missing at the end of regulation, Gudmundsson getting blocked by Amir Harris to send the game to its second overtime, Davidson's Bates Jones missing at the 2OT buzzer, and Gudmundsson again errant at the end of the third extra session, before a comparatively calm finale. After a Nelson Jr. three-pointer made GW the first squad to hit 100 at the 3:11 mark of the fourth overtime, the Colonials never trailed the rest of the way and sealed the game at the free throw line.
Now standing at 4-4 in conference play, GDUB is at .500 in the conference at the latest point in the season since finishing the 2016-17 season 10-8 in A-10 play. The Colonials will look to pull even at .500 overall and pull ahead of .500 in the conference Saturday when they travel to Richmond for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
