Men's Water Polo Starts Season with Sweep

Colonials won twice at Air Force Invitational
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The George Washington men's water polo kicked off its 2019 season Saturday with a pair of wins at the Air Force Invitational.
The two-time defending Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference champion Colonials topped the host Falcons, 20-16, in the opener at Cadet Natatorium before dispatching Salem University, 17-4, in the nightcap.
Andras Levai totaled nine goals on the day, including six vs. Air Force, while Jordan Blosser added eight in the doubleheader sweep.
GW 20, Air Force 16: Levai's six-goal effort powered the Buff and Blue in the opener.
GW found separation in a tight contest with four straight goals to close the opening half to open up an 11-6 lead. The Colonials built their advantage to as many as eight goals in the final quarter en route to victory.
Andrew Mavis and first-year Chris Lee scored three goals apiece vs. the Falcons, while Atakan Destici began his senior season with two goals and three assists.
Blosser (two goals), Josh Yardley, Henry Maas, Nick Schroeder and Gabriele Simonti also scored for the Colonials in the win.
Matt Taylor came up with seven saves to helm the defensive effort.
GW 17, Salem University 4: The Colonials scored 11 of the first 12 goals to close out the opening-day sweep.
Schroeder's score with 5:47 left in the third quarter pushed GW's lead to 11-1.
Blosser scored six times in the victory with Yardley supplying a goal and three assists. Levai, Mavis and Simonti also posted multiple goals in the second game of the doubleheader.
Taylor set a career high with 18 stops vs. the Tigers.
UP NEXT: GW closes the weekend with two more games at Air Force on Sunday. The Colonials will face University of Redlands at 11 a.m. (ET) before meeting La Verne at 4 p.m.
