Colonials Take First at Susan Rogers and Top MAISA Coed
The George Washington sailing team completed a strong weekend on the water, nabbing a pair of first-place finishes at the Susan Rogers '75 Memorial and Top MAISA Coed.
The Colonials also sent three individuals to the Carl Van Duyne MAISA Men's Singles Championship.
Susan Rogers '75 Memorial (1st of 16):
The Colonials' tied-for-first place finish with Cornell at the Susan Rogers '75 Memorial highlighted their weekend on the water. In A Division, Aitana Mendiguren and Sarah Noyes claimed the team's first women's victory of the 2019 fall season.
"The A Division crew got some good racing in on Saturday despite the light conditions," said head coach Billy Martin. "On Sunday, the weather varied, but the softening conditions made officials cut the racing short. The crew showed good boat speed and maturity."
In B Division, Clare Cassidy-Gardner and Islay Van Dusen walked away with a sixth-place finish.
Top MAISA Coed (1st out of 18):
The Colonials conquered co-ed racing at Cornell over the weekend, as well. Matt Logue and Ana Carrasco led the pack totaling nine points, finishing just ahead of local foe Georgetown.
"Despite the poor weather conditions, Matt and Ana sailed smart and were able to keep their boat speed," said Martin.
First-year Anthony Minder and senior Michael Houllahan also saw action on the course, placing 14th with 67 points.
"It was Anthony's first race," said Martin. "This was just the beginning for him. We have a lot to look forward to in his next four years at GW."
Carl Van Duyne MAISA Men's Singles:
GW's final race of the weekend was the Carl Van Duyn MAISA Men's Singles Regatta, with the top-five boats earning a spot at Nationals. Cameron Feves took 11th place, while teammates Michael Ehnot and Soenke Jordan placed 14th and 15th, respectively.
"I am proud of how we prepared, but the result does not accurately reflect how well they prepared," said Martin. "Cam was eight points from first place. That just shows you how tough qualifying is in the Mid-Atlantic."
