Colonials sweep Norfolk State to kick off weekend
GREENVILLE, N.C. -Â GW volleyball opened up the Pirate Invitational on Friday with an impressive sweep of Norfolk State before earning a split on the day after falling to the host East Carolina at Minges Coliseum.

Key Stats
• Nine different Colonials recorded a kill, led by graduate student Paty Valle's 11. Valle hit .444 for the afternoon, adding five aces, three digs and three blocks.
• Senior Jordan Young saw her first action of the season and hit .185 in 27 attempts with eight kills.
• Senior Jaimeson Lee notched a double-double with 34 assists and 13 digs.
• The Colonials out-hit the Spartans .269-.104 while holding advantages in kills (44-24), assists (40-22), digs (56-44) and aces (8-5).
• The Buff & Blue were able to have all 15 rostered players see action in the opener, doing so for the first time this season.

Set 1: GW 25, Norfolk State 23
• Valle got the ball rolling for the Colonials with three straight service aces early in the set as part of four in the opening stanza.Â
• Trailing 17-12, the Colonials ran off a 6-1 burst to even things at 18. The match remained deadlocked at 22-22 before consecutive Valle kills gave GW the lead for good. Valle finished the set off with a kill for good measure.

• The Colonials got off to a slow start in the set, finding themselves trailing by as many as six at 18-12.Â
• GW trailed 22-19 before a kill from Young sparked a 6-0 run for the Buff & Blue to finish out the set. Valle again was crucial with a pair of kills before sophomore Paz Dozie-Nnamah provided the exclamation point to finish off the set.

• Feeding off the momentum from the prior stanza, the Colonials dominated the set, attacking at a .467 clip with 15 kills against just one error.
• Four different Colonials held serve for at least four points, highlighted by the team's 8-0 run with sophomore Bella Bowman on serve.Â
• The 25-7 margin was GW's most lopsided set win since besting Davidson 25-8 on Oct. 14, 2017.

Key Stats
• Lee racked up her second double-double of the day with 22 assists and 10 digs, also adding a block to her effort.
• First-year Addie Feek hit .400 on 10 attempts with four kills, partaking in both of GW's blocks on the evening.
• The Colonials were held to .036 as a team while the Pirates hit .284, owning the edge in kills (41-28, assists (38-26), digs (49-42) and blocks (9.0-2.0)

Set 1: ECU 25, GW 20
• The Colonials took advantage of three early attack errors from the Pirates to gain a 12-9 edge. However, the hosts registered 11 of the next 16 points to claim control of the set.
• Senior Skylar Iott provided three of her team-high 12 kills in the set, also adding five digs.
Set 2: ECU 25, GW 16
• GW's attack was held in check prior to intermission being held to -.081 with only six kills in the set.Â
• A 5-0 run from ECU broke open a back-and-forth affair, with the Pirates finishing the stanza on a 12-4 spurt.
Set 3: ECU 25, GW 18
• ECU finished off the match with its best hitting set of the season, attacking at .375 while holding GW to .118.
• Iott had her best set of the day with six kills on 15 attempts, but it was not enough in the setback.
