Jenna Cone hit her 19th home run of the season
PHILADELPHIAÂ - George Washington softball took care of business Saturday, sweeping an Atlantic 10 doubleheader at La Salle.
The Colonials rolled to a 7-2 win in the opener at West Campus Softball Field before holding off the Explorers, 6-4, in the second game.
The Buff and Blue (39-15, 15-7 A-10) enter the final day of the regular season in contention for a top-two seed and first-day bye in next week's A-10 Championship.
Jenna Cone closed the day in style, launching her 19th home run of the season in the seventh inning of game two to break her own program record. The solo shot also accounted for her 63rd RBI of the spring, another program record.
Marta Fuentes paced the Colonials at the plate with a pair of multi-hit efforts.
Sierra Lange earned her A-10 leading 26th win of the season in the opener, while Megan Osterhaus collected her first career victory in the second game with a strong relief effort.
GW 7, La Salle 2:Â The Colonials built an early lead with a three-run first inning and cruised to victory in the opener.
GW made the most of its five hits, taking advantage of a walk, three hit batters and three La Salle errors to plate its seven runs.
Jessica Linquist (HBP), Cone (HBP) and Lange (walk) reached to begin the game and all three came around to score. Alessandra Ponce's RBI single was the only hit of the opening frame.
Linquist added on in the third, making it 4-0 with a solo home run, her seventh of the season.
The Colonials tacked on two more in the fourth and another in the seventh, capitalizing on errors by the Explorers. Fuentes singled, stole second and scored in both innings.
Linquist sparked the GW offense, finishing 2-for-3 with the homer and three runs scored. The junior from New Jersey has now scored a program-record 59 runs through 54 games.
Lange held La Salle hitless and struck out five over the first four frames to notch her 12th A-10 victory before Osterhaus and Jayme Cone combined to finish out the win.
GW 6, La Salle 4:Â Boosted by Jenna Cone's long ball and a two-run double from Ponce, GW never trailed in completing the doubleheader sweep.
The Colonials took a 2-0 lead in the second inning with Priscilla Martinez scoring on Hannah Eslick's sacrifice fly and Olivia Ortlieb coming in on a La Salle error.
After La Salle got on the board, Ponce extended the lead to 4-1 with her bases-loaded double in the third. It was her 17th two-bagger of the season to tie Linquist for the team lead.
GW loaded the bases with two walks and a single by Martinez in the fifth and scored again via Morgan Kummer's sac fly to extend the advantage to 5-2.
Following a home run that pulled the Explorers within a run, Cone tacked on an insurance run with her long homer to lead off the seventh. She finished the second game 1-for-2 with two walks and three runs scored.
In her second pitching appearance of the day, Osterhaus relieved Faith Weber in the third and went on to pitch 3 2/3 innings. The first-year from Minnesota worked around four hits and allowed just two runs on La Salle's sixth-inning homer.
Kaitlin Buff worked a scoreless seventh to earn her third save of the season, which ties a program record.
