Softball claimed a share of its first A-10 title
Sport: Softball
Event: Atlantic 10 Championship
George Washington softball made history last week, claiming a share of its first Atlantic 10 title.
The Colonials won three straight one-run games to open the A-10 Championship and then were named conference co-champions with Fordham after Sunday's winner-take-all final was rained out.
GW started the week with Wednesday's 4-3 win over Saint Louis, highlighted by a three-run home run from Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Jenna Cone. The Colonials then knocked off host UMass, 2-1, in eight innings behind a gem from ace Sierra Lange before earning a thrilling 12-11 victory over Saint Joseph's on Lange's walk-off single.
GW's nationally-ranked offense continued to shine by posting a .322 batting average for the tournament, while Lange handled all 28 innings in the circle over four games to improve to 29-12 on the season.
Lange, Cone and Alessandra Ponce were selected to the A-10 All-Championship Team for their efforts powering the Buff and Blue in a memorable week.
Now 42-16 on the spring, GW will continue its record-breaking season in the National Invitational Softball Championship. The Colonials landed a spot in the 19-team national field on Sunday night, and they'll open play at the Liberty Regional on Thursday vs. Marshall.
