The Colonials scored seven times in the third inning to break the game wide open, but saw the Bonnies score in their last three at-bats and put the tying run on base in the ninth inning before pulling out the win.
First-year Noah Levin gave GW an early cushion with a two-out, two-run single in the first inning, part of a 4-for-5 day for the second baseman in which he tied a career high with four RBI.
GW then pelted Bonnies starters Braydon Nelson in the third inning with six straight one-out hits to set up a monstrous frame. After a single from junior Nate Fassnacht, senior Dom D'Alessandro blasted a two-run homer to left for his 10th long ball of the year, tying for the team lead.Â
Four straight singles culminated in an RBI knock for first-year Anthony Frechette before a two-out error two batters later scored two runs, making it 7-0. Junior Steve Barmakian and Fassnacht followed with RBI singles to cap the seven-run, eight-hit onslaught.
Meanwhile, junior starter Elliott Raimo was excellent on the mound en route to his first win of the year. Raimo was electric in retiring the first 11 he faced, striking out five, before yielding a two-out solo homer in the fourth for St. Bonaventure's first baserunner.
Raimo pitched into the seventh inning, tying a team season-high with 10 punchouts. It marked the fourth double-digit strikeout game for Raimo in his three years donning the Buff & Blue. In total, the junior allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits in 6.2 frames.
The Bonnies used an error to score two in the fifth and added an RBI groundout in the seventh. An RBI fielder's choice closed the game to 9-5 in the eighth before Levin came through with another two-run single in the bottom half to push the advantage to 11-5.
Those runs proved important as St. Bonaventure scored four times in the ninth on a balk and a three-run homer. Consecutive two-out walks put the tying runs on base before junior Andrew Wheeler came on and forced a groundout to earn his first save of the year.
Six different Colonials recorded multi-hit performances, led by Levin's four knocks. Fassnacht added three hits while Barmakian, D'Alessandro, Frechette and sophomore Tyler Hix contributed two each.
Due to expected poor weather, the two teams will wrap up the series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m. Senior day ceremonies will be held between the two games.
