Lacrosse Falls at Saint Joseph’s

Colonials to host VCU on Sunday at 2 p.m.
PHILADELPHIA – The George Washington lacrosse team fell to Saint Joseph's, 15-8, on Friday evening at Sweeney Field.
After staying neck-and-neck with the Hawks through the first 23 minutes of play, Saint Joseph's pulled away with four straight goals at the end of the first half and never give up the lead.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hawks were the first to get on the board, but the Colonials didn't take long to respond, with Tori Hampton finding the back of the net just one minute later. Saint Joseph's added another tally to regain its lead, but GW answered with back-to-back strikes from Ioanna Mantzouratos and Katie Quinn to hold a 3-2 edge with 19:36 to play in the first. The two squads continued to trade goals until it was knotted at 5-5 with 7:18 left on the clock before the Hawks pulled away with four tallies to go into the break with the 9-5 advantage.
Saint Joseph's continued its momentum in the second half with a strike just four minutes after the break, but GW responded with a trio of tallies to bring the score within two with 9:35 to go. The Colonials comeback, however, was halted, as the Hawks scored five consecutive goals to pull away with the 15-8 victory.
NOTEWORTHY
• Quinn paced the squad with a pair of goals while Morgan McDonnell, Mantzouratos, Alana Greene, Kali Benvenuto, Catie Perkins, and Tori Hampton added one apiece.
• GW went 4-of-8 from the free position while the Hawks went 0-of-6.
• Sophomore keeper Jenna Oler faced 43 shots and made nine saves in all 60 minutes of play.
• The Hawks led in all statistical categories: Shots (43-16), Draw Controls (15-9), Ground Balls (20-17), and Caused Turnovers (15-12).
