Lacrosse to Wrap up Non-Conference Slate

Colonials head to Mount St. Mary’s on Wednesday, host Monmouth on Saturday
OPENING DRAW: The George Washington lacrosse team will split its final non-conference games on the road and at home. The Colonials will first make the trip to Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. matchup before hosting Monmouth at the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus on Saturday at 1 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT: In its fifth straight game in the District, GW (2-4) welcomed Robert Morris to the GW Lacrosse on Saturday afternoon for the Clash of the Colonials. After trailing for three minutes in the first half, the Colonials gained the lead at the 21:48 mark and went on to hold its advantage for the remainder of the game, earning a 12-6 victory.

FREE-POSITION FIREPOWER: The Buff and Blue saw success from the free position on Saturday, converting on 6-of-8 chances to rack up a season-high six free position goals. So far this season, GW has registered 14 free position goals and holds a two-goal margin over its competitors. Junior Katie Quinn leads the way with four free position goals, two of which came against Robert Morris, while sophomore Ioanna Mantzouratos and juniors Morgan McDonnell and Caroline Kiernan sit second on the squad with two apiece.

GROUND BALLIN': GW held a dominant 29-19 advantage in ground balls on Saturday. The Colonials' defensive unit led the way, with sophomore Cassie Scandalios picking up a game-high five while junior Posie Paoletta and sophomore keeper Jenna Oler added four apiece. Fellow defender Caroline Esmond contributed three as well to add to the cause. GW holds a 141-130 advantage in ground balls through six contests, with Scandalios and Esmond pacing the squad with 24 and 17, respectively.

POINT PRODUCERS: Eleven different Colonials have found the back of the net so far in 2019. Of those 11 student-athletes, six have already wracked up double digits in the points column. First-year Tori Hampton continues to lead the team with 13 points (10g, 3a), while Mantzouratos (12g) and Quinn (7g, 5a) sit just one point back with 12 each. The junior duo of Aidan Cage (8g, 3a) and Morgan McDonnell (5g, 6) are in a tie for third on the team with 11 apiece, with Abby Carlin sitting fourth with 10 points (6g, 4a).

ABOUT MOUNT ST. MARY'S: Mount St. Mary's (4-2) is coming off a dominant 13-5 victory over Radford on Saturday. The Mount has also topped Presbyterian (20-2), UMBC (9-8), and La Salle (16-5) this season and has fallen to Army West Point (10-6) and California (12-9). GW is 13-3 against Mount St. Mary's all-time and has won the last seven meetings.Â

ABOUT MONMOUTH: The Hawks just edged LIU Brooklyn, 14-3, over the weekend to improve to 4-2 on the season. Monmouth opened its season on a three-game win streak [Stetson (16-11), Holy Cross (10-8), Sacred Heart (17-2)] before falling to Army (15-14) and Rutgers (18-13). The Hawks own the all-time series over the Colonials, 3-0.Â

ROAD AHEAD: GW will open Atlantic 10 action with back-to-back games on the road. The Colonials will first travel to Philadelphia on Friday, March 22 to face La Salle at 3 p.m. before making the trip to North Carolina to go head-to-head with Davidson on Sunday, March 24 for a 1 p.m. draw.
