Maceo Jack scored a career-high 23 but the Spiders scorched the nets to defeat GW, 89-63
RICHMOND, Va. -- Through two possessions at Richmond on Saturday evening, GW men's basketball's rematch with the Spiders went perfectly to plan. The Colonials forced a shot clock violation on the Spiders' opening sequence, then came down the floor and subsequently got a Javier Langarica bucket assisted by fellow sophomore Justin Mazzulla.
After that, outside of Maceo Jack's career-high scoring output, very little went the way of the Buff and Blue.
Jack matched the most-prolific night of his now nearly two-year old collegiate career by dropping in 23 points and raining down a career-high six three-pointers in eight attempts. The sophomore from Buffalo needed just 15 shots to rack up his 23 in a team-high 36 minutes played.
Despite Jack and co. connecting on 48 percent of their field goal tries (24-of-50), 40 percent from deep (courtesy of Jack's marksmanship), and shooting .818 from the free throw line (9-11) in the hostile road A-10 gym, the other end of the floor was GW's undoing.
Richmond had its way on offense, getting almost whatever it wanted. The home team got 36 points in the paint and 39 from deep, effectively inside-outing the GW defense to torch the nets at the Robins Center. Grant Golden led the way with 17 on 6-of-10 field goals, with Jacob Gilyard right alongside with a matching 17 on 7-of-12 from the floor. As a team, Richmond finished .623 from the floor and .565 from three (13-of-23).
Early in the second half with GW trailing by nine, 48-39, the Colonials had the ball and a chance at making it a two-possession game with a Jack three-point try in the air. When it resulted in just Jack's second miss from long range on the night, the Spiders seized control and sprinted to the finish, closing on a 41-24 spurt and winning 89-63.
Mazzulla had eight of GW's 12 assists as the undermanned Colonials played without starter Terry Nolan Jr. and reserve Marcus Littles (illness).
GW now returns home for a Wednesday night clash with Saint Louis, live on CBSSN from the Charles E. Smith Center at 6:30 p.m.
