DJ Williams scored a game-high 21 points as the Colonials fell, 73-58
WASHINGTON -- Hoping for a bit of revenge after Saint Louis knocked them out of the Atlantic 10 Championship last season in DC, the George Washington men's basketball team welcomed the Billikens back to the District on Wednesday night for a rematch at the Charles E. Smith Center. In a game that was much closer than the final score would indicate, through six ties and 11 lead changes, the clubs battled to the finish, though the visitors left the victor once again.
Despite being undermanned, under-sized and plagued by foul trouble, GW found itself on top, 44-42, after a DJ Williams layup with just over 11 minutes remaining. Saint Louis, though, kicked it into the gear at that point and outscored GW by 17 the rest of the way to take a 73-58 win back to Missouri.
As he's done for much of the season, Williams provided consistent offense for the Colonials, with his team-high 21 points, including a career-high four three-pointers, in just 13 field goal attempts. Maceo Jack was limited to 22 minutes with his four fouls on the night, while fellow sophomore Javier Langarica, GW's only true inside presence, also played through four fouls against the physical Saint Louis side. Jack finished with 11 and Langarica netted 10, but as the pair had to sit for large periods of the game, GW couldn't find enough offense elsewhere.
True to form for one of the conference's best and most-experienced players, Javon Bess was a load for SLU. He finished with a game-high 26 points and bully-balled his way to the line 12 times where he was perfect. Bess also hit four of the Billikens' nine threes on the night (9-of-22, .409). Saint Louis shot .469 from the field and .818 from the line, making a living at the charity stripe where GW sent them often. Keyed by Bess' perfection, the visitors were 18-of-22 at the stripe. Hasahn French had a game-high 13 rebounds, while Jordan Goodwin flirted with a triple-double by tallying 10 points, nine assists and eight boards.
After a first half that saw GW connect on nearly half of its field goals (13-of-27), leading to a deadlocked score at intermission, 31-31, the Colonials went cold in the second as Saint Louis heated up. GW's field goal percentage in the final stanza sunk to .333, while Saint Louis upped its accuracy to .480 after shooting .458 in the first half.
The Colonials take the floor again at Duquesne on Saturday at noon on NBCSN.
