The Colonials shot 50 percent but were plagued by turnovers in an 85-69 defeat
PITTSBURGH -- Last month in Washington, GW and Duquesne treated fans celebrating Homecoming to a thriller in the Smith Center, with the visiting Dukes delivering some heartbreak to those clad in Buff and Blue when they escaped with a 91-85 overtime victory. In the rematch on Saturday in Pittsburgh, the teams again delivered an entertaining affair for much of the afternoon before Duquesne pulled away late to win 85-69.
The Colonials shot it well enough to win, as their 50 percent marksmanship set a team-high during conference play, but turnovers proved to be the difference. GW committed 17 in the game to just six by Duquesne, with the hosts turning the discrepancy into a 25-6 advantage in points off turnovers.
DJ Williams led a three-pronged GW attack with 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including a 3-of-5 effort from long distance. Sophomore guards Maceo Jack and Terry Nolan Jr. had similarly efficient afternoons, with Jack tallying 20 points on 6-of-8 accuracy (3-of-4 3-pointers), and Nolan coming off the bench to score 16 (5-9 FG, 3-5 3PT). The rest of the Colonials, though, combined for just 12 points with six coming from Armel Potter and Javier Langarica.
While the Colonials were the more efficient team offensively, the Dukes got far more opportunities thanks to turnovers and a 16-8 advantage on the offensive glass. GW hit 26-of-52 from the field and 9-of-20 3-pointers (.450), but Duquesne got it done with volume. The hosts had 14 more shot attempts and took 15 more 3-pointers, knocking down 12-of-35 attempts (.343). They also converted 15-of-20 at the charity stripe while GW was limited to 8-of-12.
Four Dukes scored in double figures led by Frankie Hughes' 21 and Eric Williams Jr.'s 20. Michael Hughes (9 rebounds), Marcus Weathers (8) and Williams (8) led the way to a 37-31 advantage on the glass. Langarica grabbed a career-high 13 for the undersized Colonials.
GW now returns home to play Massachusetts on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Smith Center before closing the month of February on the road with games at VCU (Feb. 23) and Rhode Island (Feb. 26).
