Colonials to host Brownie and Girl Scout Meet on Friday, travel to Kent State on Sunday

LEADING OFF: The George Washington gymnastics team opens a busy weekend of competition on Friday night when it hosts Eastern Michigan, Kent State, and Towson for Brownie and Girl Scout Day at 7 p.m. in the Charles E. Smith Center. The Colonials will then travel to Kent, Ohio for tri-meet action at Kent State with East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) foe NC State on Sunday at 1 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT: Under the bright lights of Cox Convention Center, GW put up a team score of 194.975 to finish fourth in the Perfect 10 Challenge in Oklahoma City. Contested on podium, the Colonials earned their 194.975 behind team scores of a season-high 48.800 on vault, a 48.825 on bars, a 48.525 on beam, and a 48.825 on floor. Oklahoma took home the Perfect 10 title with a 198.075, Washington came in second with a 196.250, and Arizona State finished third with 195.650.

39.000 CLUB: Out of six all-around competitors on Friday night, fifth-year co-captain Alex Zois finished fourth with a 39.250, just .050 off her season high. The Crofton, Md., native put up solid scores on all events, pacing the team on vault, bars, and floor, and recording a career-high matching 9.825 on vault. The 39.250 also marks the fourth time she has scored above the 39.00 threshold this season and the 12th time she has done so in her career. With her score at the Perfect 10 Challenge, Zois sits at the top of the EAGL all-around standings for the sixth straight week with an average score of 39.087 and also finds herself in the top five on floor (4th, 9.825 avg.) and beam (3rd, 9.804 avg.).

REVITALIZED ON VAULT: The squad posted a season-high 48.800 on vault in Oklahoma City. The Colonials, who finished 2018 ranked 11th nationally on vault with a RQS of 49.200, made a 0.125 increase from their score the previous week at their Pink Meet. Leading the way was Zois, who finished the night with a career-high matching 9.825. First-year Olivia Zona also had a strong night on vault, registering a season-high 9.800 along with Cydney Crasa. Julia McLaughlin (9.775) and Chloe Vitoff (9.600) rounded out the Colonials' season-best performance.

MOVING ON UP: GW continues to move up in the EAGL standings and currently sits in a tie for third with Pittsburgh with an average score of 194.521. NC State tops the league (195.157 avg.), followed by New Hampshire (194.878 avg.). North Carolina ranks fifth with an average of 194.467, while Towson rounds out the league at 192.689. GW also ranks third on bars (48.604 avg.) and fourth on beam (48.608 avg.).

HOT AT HOME: The Colonials have performed some of their best routines at home and boast a 45-2 record in the Smith Center dating back to the 2015 season. In 2018, GW went undefeated in its own house and tied its program record score of 196.875 on Senior Day (March 11).

CYD STAYS CONSISTENT: As the lone junior competing on the squad, Crasa has proved to be one of the most consistent performers on the team. The Stony Brook, N.Y., native posted above a 9.800 on floor for the fifth time on Friday night, earning a 9.825 to lead GW along with Zois. Crasa also did her duty on vault at the Perfect 10 Challenge, matching her season-high score with a 9.800. In addition, she has scored above a 9.700 on vault in five of six meets, one of two Colonials to do so.Â

ROAD AHEAD: Following their pair of meets this weekend, the Colonials will return to the Charles E. Smith Center on Friday, March 1, to wrap up its home slate by hosting BYU and Maryland for Senior Day at 7 p.m. Prior to march-outs at 7 p.m., GW will host "The Final Winedown," a wine tasting with light hors d'oeuvres inside the Colonials Club. The cost is $15 and includes the single-meet ticket along with an open bar with a selection of wins for fans of age.Â
