Colonials look to clinch A-10 postseason berth with victory
WASHINGTON - GW volleyball is set to wrap up its three-week, six-match road swing with a quick jaunt to Revolutionary Rival George Mason on Friday. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: The Colonials are coming off a 1-1 weekend, earning a four-set triumph at Davidson before falling in straight sets to first-place VCU. GW received strong efforts from senior Jordan Young (13 kills against Davidson) and first-year Sarah Pintel (8 vs. VCU) on the attacking side, while the team registered 16.0 kills against the Wildcats, the most in a four-set match this year.
ACROSS THE NET: GW and George Mason meet for the second time this season following a thrilling five-set triumph on September 28 to open conference play. Senior Skylar Iott had a career day against the Patriots with a career-high 33 kills to lead the way. Mason has struggled in conference play with 11 straight losses, most recently taking a four-set defeat at Davidson Sunday.
The Patriots are fourth in the league in blocks per set (2.16), headlined by Peyton Ehmke, who is 10th individually in the circuit with 1.0 rejections per frame.
ONE IS THE MAGIC NUMBER: The Colonials need just one win in their final three games (or one Duquesne loss) to secure a trip to the A-10 Championship for the second time in three years under head coach Sarah Bernson. GW is currently tied for fourth place with La Salle but holds the tiebreaker due to two head-to-head victories over the Explorers. The top six teams in the loop qualify for the A-10 Championship, which will be held Nov. 22-24 at Rhode Island.
DIVIDING LINE: A clear pattern has emerged for the Buff & Blue this year, utilizing a strong serving game and a stout block to lead to victories. With its 16 blocks on Friday against Davidson, GW improved to 10-2 when registering at least eight blocks as a team on the season, compared to 3-10 with seven or fewer. The same goes for aces, where the Colonials are 11-4 with five or more service aces in a match, and 2-8 with four or fewer.
