Men’s Basketball Falls at Towson
11/5/2019 9:52:00 PM | Men's Basketball
The 2019-20 season started in earnest Tuesday night in Towson, Maryland where the George Washington men's basketball team visited the host Tigers.
The GW sideline was packed with new faces and some familiar faces in new roles. In his collegiate debut, first year Jameer Nelson Jr. registered team-highs with 15 points, five assists and seven rebounds (tied with Arnaldo Toro), while fellow first year Jamison Battle showed flashes of the shooting stroke that has the GW brass so bullish on the team's future. Battle's first collegiate bucket came on a deep three from NBA range, as he tallied two of the squad's eight triples in the contest.
Junior Maceo Jack continued his long range prowess from last season by canning 4-of-8 triples to join Nelson Jr. in double figures with 14 points. Jack did not attempt a shot within the three-point arc.
Towson simply had more firepower in its arsenal this time, as four Tigers hit double digits, led by Allen Betrand's game-high 18 points. Juwan Gray chipped in 17 for the home team.
In Head Coach Jamion Christian's debut for the Buff and Blue, the Colonials both made more threes (8) than their opposition (7), and were effective getting to the free throw line where they made more freebies (12) than the Tigers attempted (9).
The game was won inside though as Towson collected half of its points in the paint to outdo GW, 36-16, inside. The bench was also a factor with the Tigers picking up 28 points in reserve compared to the Colonials' 10.
Senior Arnaldo Toro returned to game action after missing all but the first seven games of last season due to injury, but was limited to 24:56 of time due to foul trouble. He finished with seven points and seven rebounds, but the physicality of Towson provided a staunch test. Transfer Ace Stallings also got in on the action seeing 5:55 of game action in his first game for GW.
GW will turn the page quickly and turn its sights to Howard for Home Opening Weekend. Tip-time on Saturday is 4pm from the Charles E. Smith Center in downtown, DC. A free pregame tailgate will take place prior to the game on 22nd St. between F and G at 2:30pm.
