Colonials to make 2019-20 debut in the newly refreshed Charles E. Smith Center
TIPPING OFF: The GW men's basketball team is set to host District rival Howard for its Home Opener on Saturday. The Colonials will tip-off in the newly refreshed Charles E. Smith Center at 4 p.m.
HOME OPENER TAILGATE: Get to the Smith Center early because 22nd Street between G and F will be shut down for our Home Opener Tailgate starting at 2:30 p.m. There will be games, music and free food and drinks for all ticketed fans, and admission is free for all students with a valid GWorld.
LAST TIME OUT: The Colonials (0-1) got their first taste of the 2019-20 season on Tuesday at Towson, falling to the Tigers, 72-58. In Head Coach Jamion Christian's debut for the Buff and Blue, the Colonials both made more threes (8) than their opposition (7), and were effective getting to the free throw line where they made more freebies (12) than the Tigers attempted (9).
FIRST LOOK: The GW sideline was packed with new faces and some familiar faces in new roles on Tuesday. In his collegiate debut, first-year Jameer Nelson Jr. registered team highs with 15 points, five assists and seven rebounds (tied with Arnaldo Toro). The Haverford, Pa., product is believed to be the only first-year student-athlete in the country to both start and lead his squad in points, rebounds, assists and steals.
Fellow first-year Jamison Battle showed flashes of success in his debut at well. Battle's first collegiate bucket came on a deep three from NBA range, as he tallied two of the squad's eight triples in the contest.
ABOUT HOWARD: The Bison (0-1) fell short in their home opener against Washington Adventist on Tuesday evening, 71-68. Senior Charles 'CJ' Williams led all scorers with 19 points while Zion Cousins brought down a team-high seven rebounds. Washington Adventist's bench outscored Howard's, 31-14, and the Shock held the advantage shooting 43% (27-62) from the floor, while they held the Bison to 34% (23-65) for the contest.
SERIES HISTORY: GW owns a 9-1 lead in the series, including 8-1 at home. This marks the fourth consecutive season the teams have played in Smith Center, with GW taking a 79-62 win in 2016, an 84-75 win in 2017 and a 70-64 victory last season.
DC'S TEAM: Long a hot spot for the world's top talent, the DMV (DC, Maryland and Virginia) once again boasts talent on the Colonials' sideline in 2019-20, as Coach Christian and his staff prioritize keeping the country's best playing in their own backyard. In 2019-20, Nebraska transfer Amir Harris (Fredrick, Md.), Mount St. Mary's transfer Ace Stallings (Sidwell Friends) and first-years Chase Paar (Mount Airy, Md.) and Miles Gally (Rockville, Md.) join Mezie Offurum (Georgetown Prep) and Justin Williams (Ellicott City, Md.) on DC's Team.
THE TURNAROUND ARTIST: Coach Jamion Christian returned to the area over the summer to helm GW, the program he grew up watching in the 1990s at home in New Kent, Va. Christian comes to DC after engineering rapid turnarounds in both of his last two stops. Last season at Siena, his "Mayhem" brand of basketball saw the Saints improve from 251st to 43rd nationally in scoring defense, 322nd to eighth in fewest turnovers, and 250th to 74th in 3-point field goals per game. Siena, which was voted to finish last in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference preseason poll, went on to a tied-for-second-place regular season finish with an 11-7 league record, just one game out of first place. Previously, after being hired at the age of 29 at his alma mater, Mount St. Mary's, he won two NEC Tournament Championships and guided the Mount to 101 wins and a winning record in conference play all six seasons, after taking over a program that went 8-21 the season before he arrived.
