Men’s Basketball Falls to Morgan St., 68-64
11/16/2019 4:47:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Entering play on Saturday, GW's Arnaldo Toro led the country in both total rebounds (49) and rebounds per game (16.3). After tallying 22 points and 18 rebounds last Saturday against Howard, and then tallying his first career 20-20 game with 20 points and an A-10 record-tying 24 rebounds on Tuesday vs. American, there was no question that Toro was going to play a significant role in the game plans against Morgan St. on Saturday afternoon.
After logging 2:27 of game time against the Bears, plans changed. Toro (day-to-day) was sidelined with a lower-body injury and sat the remainder of the contest, leaving GW's young guards undersized against the bigger opposition. Without Toro, Morgan St. took advantage of its size inside and outrebounded GW 45-29 while holding a 40-20 edge in points in the paint.
First-year Shawn Walker Jr. drew his first collegiate starting assignment and logged a team-high 34:18 of court time, and the 6'6' guard paced the team with six boards. Walker also netted seven points, two assists, and a pair of steals in finishing with a +4 +/-, notably joining fellow first-year Jamison Battle as the team leaders in minutes played and plus/minus. Battle hit double figures with 10 points, and he connected on a pair of threes, bringing his four-game career total to 12 (3.0 3pt./game). Signs that the future in Foggy Bottom is bright abounded Saturday despite the setback, with Battle's +6, and frosh point man Jameer Nelson Jr. ably switching to the two-position at times. Nelson Jr. led all Colonials in scoring with 14 points in the three first-years starting line-up.
GW was the aggressor in the Beach Day matinee, getting to the line 31 times and converting 23 freebies, more than the Bears attempted (21). Four Bears would hit double-figures though as they took a 10-point lead late in the second half with 6:39 to play, and GW just ran short on time in the comeback bid. Trailing by three on the final possession, Walker got off a good look for a game-tying three in the corner that fell short, and the ball found its way to Maceo Jack for another game-tying attempt in the closing seconds that hit just wide. Morgan St. converted a free throw at the other end to account for the 4-point final differential.
After spending the last three games at home, GW heads to the Bahamas now for a three-game stay. The Buff and Blue open tournament play on Friday, November 22nd vs. Kansas City at 5 p.m. The Colonials also play Saturday and Sunday in a three-games-in-three-days test that will help prepare them for tournament play in March.
