Colonials tip off with Eagles on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
TIPPING OFF: The George Washington men's basketball team will face its second straight District foe on Tuesday when it goes head-to-head with American for International Night on Tuesday. Tip time from the Smith Center is 7 p.m. on ESPN+ and the TuneIn radio app.
INTERNATIONAL NIGHT: The Colonials will host the Eagles for their International Night, featuring a halftime performance by GW Bhangra, free Tokyo Dachi George T-Shirts, a free churro giveaway, and more!
LAST TIME OUT: The Colonials (1-1) opened their home season with a 76-62 win over Howard on Saturday afternoon. In front of a raucous Smith Center crowd, the home squad saw four Colonials finish the night in double digits as first-year head coach Jamion Christian notched his first career victory for the Buff and Blue.
TORO CAUSIN' TROUBLE: In just his second game back after missing the final 26 games last season following surgery, Arnaldo Toro put on his best performance to date with his parents in attendance. The Puerto Rican big man had his way with Howard who had no answer for the senior star, as he racked up career-highs with a 22-point, 18-rebound double-double. Toro sunk 9-of-12 from field goals and registered a +25 +/- rating.
BLAME IT ON THE JUICE: After pacing all players off the bench in 2018-19 with 4.3 points per game, Justin 'Juice' Williams continued his momentum from last season with an 11 point outing against Howard. The senior netted a +24 during his 22:32 of court time, and after making seven three-pointers total in his first three seasons at GW, he broke loose for three triples on Saturday afternoon.
YOUNG GUNS: The duo of Jameer Nelson Jr. and Jamison Battle have quickly asserted themselves into the Colonials' starting linuep. After registering team highs with 15 points, five assists and seven rebounds (tied with Arnaldo Toro) in his collegiate debut, Nelson Jr. dished 11 dimes against Howard and was just a bucket shy of a double-double.
In his first career start in the Buff and Blue against the Bison, Battle netted four three-pointers. Two games into his collegiate career, the Robbinsdale, Minnesota, product is averaging 3.0 made 3-pointers per contest.
ABOUT AMERICAN: The Eagles (0-2) make the short trip to Foggy Bottom after falling to William and Mary, 79-70, in their home opener on Friday evening. Sa'eed Nelson finished with a team-best 22 points for AU, while Jamir Harris added 26 and Jacob Boonyasith registered 11 to complete the trio of Eagles in double-digits.
SERIES HISTORY: The Colonials topped the Eagles, 71-67, in an overtime thriller last season that saw the then-sophomore trio of Justin Mazzulla (19), Javier Langarica (14), and Maceo Jack (13) combine for 46 points. American holds a 24-21 lead all-time in the series, but the Colonials have won 11 of the last 12 meetings and hold an 11-9 edge in games played in the Smith Center.
