GW Drops DC Thriller to American, 67-65

The DMV basketball crowd was treated to an early-season thriller on Tuesday night at the Charles E. Smith Center, where two proud programs went toe-to-toe for their city. The George Washington Colonials hosted the American Eagles, and in a game befitting of DC's storied basketball history and talent base, the game went to the buzzer.
GW's Arnaldo Toro put on a record-setting show wearing his home whites for the Buff and Blue in a monstrous 20-point, 24-rebound effort. The Hercules from Hormigueros (PR) tied an all-time Atlantic 10 record with his 24 boards, which was previously set by the late Yinka Dare for GW against Saint Bonaventure in 1993. His 13 offensive rebounds also set an all-time GW high.
American, though, made the winning play at winning time as Patriot League Player of the Year candidate Sa'eed Nelson showed his bonafides. After putting the Eagles up two at 65-63 with :23 seconds remaining, the senior answered right back after GW frosh Jameer Nelson Jr. cooly tied the game at 65 with a lay-up of his own. It was Nelson vs. Nelson for the DC title, and the elder Nelson emerged victoriously. On the final possession of the game, Sa'eed answered with a jumper from just outside the paint that dropped through as the buzzer sounded, sending American back across the city with the buzzer-beating win.
Nelson J.r finished with 13 points for GW, while fellow frosh Jamison Battle continued to flash his sweet lefty shooting stroke in another hot night from deep. Battle got all of his 12 points from long range in a 4-of-8 performance behind the arc, to up his average to 3.3 3s per game in his three-game career.
Junior point guard Justin Mazzulla netted 10 for GW on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting night in the reserve role. American got matching baker's dozens from Stacy Beckton Jr. and Jacob Boonyasith to back Nelson's 20-point night.
After committing an uncharacteristic 13 turnovers in the first half for a Jamion Christian-coached team, GW settled down in the second and committed just four turnovers after the break to chip away at American's seven-point halftime lead. After GW knotted the game on a Nelson Jr. bucket at the 11:25 mark to make it 48-48, neither side led by more than four for the rest of the game. Toro got his record-tying rebound with 1:11 to go and the game tied at 63-63, setting the stage for Nelson, Nelson, and Nelson again.
GW now turns its attention to Beach Day with bucket hats at 1 pm Saturday against Morgan St. on ESPN+ and TuneIn.
