Colonials square off with Duquesne Friday and La Salle Sunday
WASHINGTON -Â GW volleyball hits the road for the first time in conference play this weekend, visiting Duquesne on Friday night at 7 p.m. before trekking across the state to face off with La Salle on Sunday at 1 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT:Â The Colonials opened up conference play with a stirring five-set comeback over Revolutionary Rival George Mason on Saturday, rallying from a 2-0 deficit to win in five. Senior Skylar Iott led the charge with a career-high 33 kills and 37 points en route to being named the A-10 Co-Player of the Week.
ACROSS THE NET: Duquesne opened up conference play last weekend with a four-set loss to Davidson and a sweep at the hands of VCU, both on the road. Middle hitter Liz Wayne is the catalyst for the Dukes' offense with 2.63 kills per set while hitting .357, the second-best mark in the A-10. Outside hitter Summer Slade leads the team at 2.96 kills per set and hits .153. Duquesne won the only matchup between the two schools last year in five, but GW has controlled the all-time series with a 37-17 mark.
The Explorers split last weekend on the road, falling to VCU in five before sweeping Davidson on Sunday. Outside hitter Devin Corah led the way against the Wildcats with 19 kills on 35 attempts and is second on the team overall with 3.17 kills per set. La Salle leads the league in kills (13.66) and assists (12.79) per set with setter Kathryn Wood distributing over 10 helpers per frame, second-best in the league. La Salle won last year's only meeting in four, just its third win in 44 meetings all-time between the programs.
INSIDE IOTT'S BIG DAY:Â Iott's 33 kills against Mason were impressive enough, but the impact was felt when the team needed her most. The Ida, Mich., native racked up 25 kills over the final three sets, including a preposterous 10 in the final stanza. It was the first 30-kill match for a Colonial since Chidima Osuchukwu had 30 against Dayton in 2014.
Iott enters the weekend second in the league in total kills and points and third in kills and points per set.
BLOCK THIS WAY:Â Not to be outdone, the Colonials were once again great at the net against Mason, recording 15 team blocks on the night. It was the sixth match this year with double-digit blocks, pushing the Buff & Blue into the top 50 nationally with 2.46 blocks per set. First-year Addie Feek led the way with seven rejections and is now third in the league with 1.18 blocks per set.
