Colonials aim to extend three-game winning streak
WASHINGTON -Â Fresh off back-to-back sweeps, and winners of three in a row overall, GW volleyball hits the road this weekend to begin a five-game conference road trip. The Colonials open the weekend on Friday at Dayton at 7 p.m. before battling Saint Louis on Sunday at 1 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT:Â The Colonials finished out the non-conference season with a sweep of Norfolk State to close out a 3-0 weekend. Senior Skylar Iott, who surpassed 1,000 career kills on Saturday, hit .276 with 12 kills to lead GW. The Buff & Blue defense held the Spartans to a .000 attacking percentage for the night, thanks in part to nine blocks.
ROUND TWO:Â In an odd quirk of the A-10 schedule. the Colonials have already played La Salle and Duquesne twice each and will now play the Flyers and Billikens a second time before seeing the other half of the conference.
GW will look to rebound after falling to both teams at home two weeks ago, accounting for the team's only two conference losses thus far. Dayton sits atop the league at 7-0 while Saint Louis is just a game back at 6-1 with its lone loss against UD.
Dayton's Jaime Peterson is the top attacker in the conference, ranking among the top 10 nationally in kills per set, points per set, and total kills. The Flyers are second in the league in kills per set and hitting percentage. SLU's Maya Taylor is second to Peterson in both kills and points per set and the team as a whole is third in attacking and kills per set.
I,000TT -Â Iott recorded her 1,000th career kill last Saturday against Duquesne, inching ever closer to the all-time top 10 in program history. The Ida, Mich., native now has 1,015 kills in her career and is third in the league in kills and points per set and total kills and points, all in the top 75 nationally. Iott has tallied at least 12 kills in six of GW's seven A-10 matches with three double-doubles.
DEFENSE WINS MATCHES:Â The Colonials racked up 18 team blocks in Friday's five set marathon win against La Salle, the most in any match this season, and the most since 18 against Buffalo in 2016. The Buff & Blue are 23rd in the nation, and second in the A-10, with 2.6 blocks per set, having registered at least 7.0 in all seven conference matches.
