Colonials edged the Explorers on Friday night
On Friday night at the Charles E. Smith Center, GW volleyball welcomed in the La Salle Explorers, a team against which the Buff and Blue enjoyed a sweep in Philly earlier this month.
Early in the action, it seemed like another sweep was in order as the home squad took both of the first two sets, 25-23 and 26-24. The close scores, though, were indicative of the fight La Salle brought to DC, and the visitors made sure they wouldn't go down easy again.
The Explorers secured a 25-15 third-set win, and in a fourth-set marathon, La Salle forced a decisive fifth set by topping GW, 29-27, after surviving match point down 26-25. The back-and-forth fourth saw nine ties and five lead changes before La Salle claimed it.
In the decisive fifth set, GW grad student Paty Valle took over and nearly equaled her kill output from the first four sets (six) in the 15-point fifth set alone (four). In a set that saw GW swing a whopping .474, Valle was dominant.
Senior Skylar Iott double-doubled for GW with 18 kills and 10 digs, while classmate Jaimeson Lee ran the show with a double-double of her own on a 40-assist, 16-dig night. Lee's six blocks marked a season high on a GW defense that largely outdid their opposition. The GW D recorded 18 total team blocks to La Salle's 12, while individually junior Callie Fauntleroy registered a season-high eight block assists.
Senior Jordan Young put on one of her finest performances of the season in the victory, with a season-high 14 kills, finishing between Iott and Valle as the three Colonials to notch double-digits there. Young's .293 attack percentage topped everyone on the La Salle side.
Tomorrow night, the team is back in action at 7 p.m. against Duquesne, another team GW swept on the road two weeks ago.
