Bautista hits six 3s, leads the way with 21 points
WASHINGTON - VCU came to DC boasting the conference's only undefeated record in A-10 play and with the league's top scoring defense (49.3 ppg allowed) and three-point defense (.211 3pt. fg% allowed), which also ranked second in the nation. The Rams will now depart the District having the GW women's basketball team put a serious dent in each.
In a 57-48 win for GW, led by senior Mei-Lyn Bautista's season-high 21 points, the Colonials (4-2 A-10) pulled into fourth place in the conference standings and within a game of the top. Bautista stared down the Rams defense and bombed away from deep, sinking a career-high six 3-pointers in 11 attempts from distance.
As a team the Buff and Blue was true on 10-of-24 3-balls (.417) while holding their guests to 1-of-14 (.071) from long range. Bautista played like the All-Tournament team point guard she was on her team's Championship run last season with a game-high five assists against just one turnover, plus three steals in 38 minutes played.
The Rams led 12-9 after the opening stanza with Bautista accounting for all of GW's points. When the Rams extended to a 22-17 edge with 3:07 to play in the first half, considering the defensive chops that VCU entered with, what GW did over the next 8:34 of game time spanning the second and third quarters was remarkable.
Back-to-back triples from first-year Maddie Loder and senior Kelsi Mahoney gave GW its first lead of the game at 25-22 with a minute remaining in the second quarter, and from there the Colonials only pinned the gas pedal harder to the floor. When the barrage was over midway through the third quarter, GW had enjoyed a 17-0 run that turned a five-point deficit into a 12-point lead.
The reigning A-10 Champions knew better, though, than to expect any team to go quietly. VCU whittled the Colonials lead to two in the fourth, but GW wouldn't let the Rams net an equalizer and pulled away for the nine-point win. Loder joined Bautista in double-figures with 12 points, while Neila Luma and Sarah Overcash both ripped down a game-high-tying 10 rebounds.
Now one-third through the conference slate, a road date is next on GW's schedule. The Colonials travel to Pittsburgh for a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. with Duquesne, before returning home to host Davidson and Field Trippers from around the D.C. area on Thursday, January 31st at 12 p.m.
