Volleyball Drops Pair of Matches in Brooklyn

Lee extends double-double streak to six straight matches
BROOKLYN, N.Y. – GW volleyball fell in its opening two matches at the Blackbird Invitational on Friday, suffering a four-set defeat to South Florida and a three-set loss to Holy Cross.
Match 1: South Florida 3, GW 1 (18-25, 16-25, 25-20, 18-25)
Key Stats
• Juniors Skylar Iott (10 kills, 10 digs) and Jaimeson Lee (36 assists, 17 digs) pushed their respective double-double streaks to five in a row.
• GW (2-5) recorded double-digit blocks for the third time in six matches this year, led by senior Kelsey Clark (one solo, four assists) and junior Jordan Young (five assists)
How it Happened
Set 1: South Florida 25, GW 18
• USF pulled away late via a late 7-1 run after GW had cut the lead to 18-17.
• The Colonials racked up 6.5 blocks in the opening stanza, including a solo and four assists from Clark.
Set 2: South Florida 25, GW 16
• The Bulls opened up an early four-point advantage and put the set out of reach with another 7-1 spurt that led to a 20-11 advantage.
• A pair of kills and a block assists from Young elevated the Colonials to within six (22-16) before USF finished off the set.
Set 3: GW 25, South Florida 20
• The Colonials extended the match with their best set of the day, hitting .333 (15k-3e-36a) in the third.
• GW stormed to a 4-1 lead and never looked back in the near wire-to-wire set win.
• Clark was the headliner with eight kills in the third set alone, hitting a robust .583 (8k-1e-12a)
Set 4: South Florida 25, GW 18
• A 6-0 run spurred the Colonials to a 13-7 edge, and on the verge of potentially forcing a fifth set before a USF comeback.
• The Bulls ripped off seven of the next eight points to even things at 14 before continuing the run and claiming 18 of the final 23 points for the set and match victory.
Match 2: Holy Cross 3, GW 0 (24-26, 21-25, 8-25)
Key Stats
• Young once again led GW in hitting, recording 10 kills while posting a .250 (10k-4e-24a) attack percentage.
• Lee dished out 21 assists and recorded 13 digs for her sixth straight double-double. She also added a solo block and five block assists.
How it Happened
Set 1: Holy Cross 26, GW 24
• GW held a 20-16 lead before the Crusaders (1-8) roared back to take a 22-21 edge via a 6-1 run. Holy Cross then thwarted a set point, scoring the final three points to take the set.
• Young tallied six of her team-best 10 kills while hitting .500 in the opening stanza.
Set 2: Holy Cross 25, GW 21
• Holy Cross again utilized a mid-set comeback, recovering from a 16-14 GW lead with a 5-0 spurt to take a 19-16 edge they would not relinquish.
Set 3: Holy Cross 25, GW 8
• Leading 9-7, the Crusaders scored 16 of the final 17 points to finish off the match in straight sets.
