GW set to battle South Florida, Holy Cross and LIU Brooklyn
ABOUT LAST WEEKEND:Â GW nearly went the distance in all three of its matches, securing five-set victories over Toledo and Western Illinois before falling in four sets to Bradley as part of the CEFCU Invitational in Peoria, Ill. The Colonials swiped the first and second sets in both of their wins before holding on to win in five.
Junior setter Jaimeson Lee and senior middle blocker Alexis Lete were named to the All-Tournament teams for their efforts. Lee tallied at least 47 assists in each of the matches while establishing a new career high with 49. Lete had one of the best matches of her career against Bradley, finishing with career bests in kills (11), hitting percentage (.409) and points (12.5).Â
ACROSS THE NET:Â The Buff & Blue will see a couple familiar faces in Holy Cross and LIU Brooklyn after facing the two a year ago. GW has not battled South Florida since 1993. Overall, the Colonials have only faced each of the schools one time in program history.
South Florida is off to a 5-1 start on the year, sweeping its opening weekend before going 2-1 at the Tiger Classic in Baton Rouge, La. last week. The Bulls knocked off host LSU in five sets last weekend, a trend for USF in that four of its five wins have been five-set matches. USF has yet to play a three-set match this year.
Holy Cross has yet to find the win column in seven matches this year, falling in all three matches last weekend at its Holy Cross Invitational. The Crusaders battled A-10 foe Rhode Island tough in the tournament finale before dropping the match in five sets. GW swept Holy Cross last September as part of the GW Tournament.
The host Blackbirds will be playing in the Eastern Time Zone for the first time this year after a pair of tournaments in Las Vegas and Portland, Ore. LIU Brooklyn is coming off a Northeast Conference championship season in 2017, advancing to the NCAA Tournament, where it fell to Washington. GW lost a tough five-set match to LIU Brooklyn last September in the GW Invitational.
DOUBLE TROUBLE: Juniors Skylar Iott and Lee have been double-double machines for the Colonials, each achieving the feat in four consecutive matches. Iott had registered just two double-doubles in her career prior to the current stretch and has recorded at least 20 kills in three of the four matches. She had previously tallied 20-plus kills just once in her career (25 at Seton Hall, Sept. 2, 2016).
Lee, who had 11 double-doubles a year ago, is up to 17 in her still-blossoming career. The native Texan has notched 40 or more assists in each of the four affairs and has thus far created new career highs in assists (49, twice), digs (22 vs Toledo), and block assists (six vs American) this year.
FIVE-SET PHENOMS:Â GW showed resiliency last week in winning a pair of five-set matches against Toledo and Western Illinois for the first two wins of the campaign. Dating back to last year, the Colonials have triumphed in six straight five-set matches and are now 7-2 in those situations under second-year head coach Sarah Bernson.
AMONG LEAGUE LEADERS:Â Here's where the Colonials stand among A-10 competition through the first two weekends of play:
- Iott: 2nd total kills (87), 3rd kills/set (4.14)
- Lee: 2nd assists/set (10.00)
- Bella Bowman: 2nd digs/set (5.24), 3rd total digs (110)
- Jordan Young: 4th service aces/set (0.38)
- Team: 3rd digs/set (16.52), 3rd services aces/set (1.19), 4th blocks/set (1.83)
