Men’s Water Polo Earns Sweep at Aggie Roundup

Colonials improved to 8-2 with two wins Saturday
WOODLAND, Calif. – George Washington men's water polo continued its strong start, sweeping a doubleheader Saturday at the Aggie Roundup hosted by UC Davis.
The 15th-ranked Colonials began the day by dropping Fresno Pacific, 21-15, before coming from behind to beat Whittier, 9-8, in the nightcap to improve to 8-2 on the season.
Andras Levai piled up nine goals on the day, including a season-high seven against Fresno Pacific. The sophomore from Hungary also netted GW's go-ahead goal against Whittier.
GW 21, Fresno Pacific 15: The Colonials took control against the Sunbirds with a big third quarter.
After its lead was cut to 10-9 early in the second half, GW netted five straight goals, including two apiece from Mavis and Levai. Jack Kerwin's score ended the run, making it 15-9 with 2:55 left in the third.
The Buff and Blue advantage swelled to eight goals, at 19-11, on Mavis' score with 5:59 left in the game.
Levai posted a game-high six steals and two assists, in addition to his season-high goal total. Mavis totaled six goals, Destici added three goals, three assists and three steals and Kerwin and Jordan Blosser scored two goals apiece in the victory.
GW 9, Whittier 8: The Colonials climbed out of an early three-goal hole to down the Poets. They took their first lead at 7-6 on Kerwin's score in the final minute of the third quarter and continued to battle into the final period.
Levai's goal to make it 9-8 with 3:46 left turned out to be the game-winner as GW's defense held the rest of the way.
Levai, Mavis and Destici netted two goals apiece with Kerwin, Blosser and Henry Maas also scoring.
After allowing four goals in the opening quarter, GW goalkeeper Austin Pyrch ceded just four more over the final 24 minutes. The senior from Texas finished with eight saves.
