Colonials set for three more games at Aggie Roundup
DAVIS, Calif. – George Washington men's water polo kicked off its West Coast trip Friday, falling 9-6 to No. 18 California Baptist.
Atakan Destici posted three goals and an assist, but the 15th-ranked Colonials came up short against the Lancers in their opener at UC Davis' Aggie Roundup.
After falling behind by three goals early, GW (6-2) rallied to tie it at 5 on a goal by Destici with 4:46 remaining in the third quarter.
Cal Baptist (5-4) answered with the go-ahead goal a minute later and led the rest of the way. The Lancers scored four of the final five goals in a rematch of a matchup from last week's Princeton Invitational won in the final seconds by the Colonials.
In addition to his offensive contributions, Destici also tied for the team lead Friday with three steals. Andrew Mavis, Zach Slaughter and Andras Levai also scored for the Colonials.
Austin Pyrch set a season high with his 14 saves.
UP NEXT: GW continues its run at the Aggie Roundup on Saturday, facing off against Fresno Pacific (11 a.m.) and Whittier (6:30 p.m.). The Colonials are slated to face No. 17 San Jose State on Sunday to close the weekend.
