Colonials to welcome in three foes in adjusted schedule
Tournament Central
George Washington volleyball returns to Foggy Bottom for its final weekend of non-conference play, hosting the dual-site Dig The District Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Due to the impact of Hurricane Florence, Hampton and Memphis were unable to attend. As a result, the schedule has been altered in that GW will host Alabama A&M at 11 a.m. and now Morgan State at 7 p.m. The Colonials will welcome in Coppin State with game time changed to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Saturday's 11 a.m. matchup between Memphis and Coppin State as well as GW's matchup with Memphis has been canceled. An updated tournament schedule is available here.
ABOUT LAST WEEKEND: The Colonials suffered a pair of defeats on Friday to South Florida in four sets and Holy Cross in straight sets before bouncing back for a five-set victory against LIU Brooklyn on Saturday. Senior Alexis Lete was GW's most efficient offensive player, hitting .432 in the three matches with just two errors. She also totaled 11 blocks to earn all-tournament honors. Junior setter Jaimeson Lee recorded a double-double in each game and has now done so in seven straight matches.
ACROSS THE NET: The Buff & Blue welcome in a pair of local MEAC foes in Coppin State and Morgan State in addition to a brand new opponent in Alabama A&M.
GW and AAMU have never met in volleyball. The Bulldogs, out of the SWAC, are 3-9 on the campaign and have dropped seven straight matches after posting a five-set victory over Memphis in late August.
Morgan State was added to the tournament this week after its originally scheduled tournament in Williamsburg, Va. was canceled in anticipation of Hurricane Florence. The Bears enter the weekend 5-6 after a 3-1 record last Friday and Saturday at the University of New Orleans Tournament.
Coppin State visits the District to wrap up the weekend, facing off against GW for the first time since 2006. The Colonials have won all three previous matchups against the Eagles, who enter this weekend with a 2-10 mark after an 0-3 weekend at the Bryant University Hampton Inn-vitational last week.
SET FOR SUCCESS: Lee has continued the tremendous start to her junior season, recording seven straight double-doubles. She has now posted 20 double-doubles in her career and is just four double-doubles away from matching last year's total of 11. The Texas native has recorded 88 percent of GW's assists (313/356) and ranks second in the Atlantic 10 in assists per set (9.48) and third in total assists (313).
FIVE-SET PHENOMS: All three of GW's victories this season have been five-set wins, including Saturday's victory over LIU Brooklyn. Dating back to last year, the Colonials have triumphed in seven straight five-set matches and are now 8-2 in those situations under second-year head coach Sarah Bernson.
HOME SWEET HOME: GW has played just one home match through the first three weekends of the season, but that will change quickly. Starting with this weekend, the Colonials are set to play nine of their next 10 games in D.C. with the lone road match a quick trip to George Mason.
AMONG LEAGUE LEADERS: Here's where the Colonials stand among A-10 competition through the first three weekends of play:
