Colonials survive five-set thriller with Western Illinois, fall in four to Bradley
PEORIA, Ill. – A second straight five-set marathon victory gave GW volleyball a winning weekend as the Colonials split a pair of matches on Saturday at the CEFCU Invitational, hosted by Bradley.
The Buff & Blue (2-3) started the day with a 25-15, 25-17, 26-28, 20-25, 21-19 triumph over Western Illinois (1-4) before testing the host Braves (5-1) in a four-set setback (21-25, 25-21, 11-25, 26-28) to conclude the tournament.
Senior Alexis Lete and junior Jaimeson Lee were named to the All-Tournament team for their efforts over the three-game stretch.
Match 1: GW 3, Western Illinois 2
Key Stats
• GW continued its steady improvement in attack percentage, hitting a season-best .189 (64k-30e-180a) while holding Western Illinois to an opponent season-low .108 (51k-33e-166a)
• Junior Skylar Iott (23 kills, 12 digs) and Lee (49 assists, 16 digs) sustained their hot start to the year with their third-straight double-double performances.
• Lee's 49 assists constituted a new career best as she added two kills, a solo block and a block assist.
• Junior Jordan Young matched her career high with 15 kills, the third time in her career she has reached the mark.
• Lete matched her career high with eight kills in the opening match. Fellow senior Kelsey Clark contributed nine block assists to establish a new career best.

Set 1: GW 25, Western Illinois 15
• GW stormed to an early 6-1 advantage and cruised to a dominating first-set victory.
• The Colonials hit .267 (12k-4e-30a), while WIU broke even (8k-8e-32a) at .000.
• First-year Paz Dozie-Nnamah provided a spark off the bench with two kills and a block in the first action of her career.
Set 2: GW 25, Western Illinois 17
• GW continued its strong start, hitting a season-best .345 (13k-3e-29a) to roll to a 2-0 lead in the match.
• After an early back-and-forth that featured seven ties and four lead changes, the Colonials utilized a six-point spurt to take a 17-9 edge they would not relinquish.
• Young was the catalyst during the run, notching back-to-back aces en route to recording four on the day.
Set 3: Western Illinois 28, GW 26
• Western Illinois extended the match with another nip-and-tuck set that featured nine ties and four lead changes.
• GW had a chance to put the nail in the coffin, leading 24-20, but the Leathernecks rattled off four straight points to even the set, 24-24.
• The Colonials eventually staved off a set point at 26-25 before WIU recorded consecutive points to nab the set and force a fourth stanza.
Set 4: Western Illinois 25, GW 20
• Buoyed by the comeback, Western Illinois had its best set of the match, hitting .278 (15k-5e-36a), while GW was held to .089 (12k-8e-45a)
• The set was tied 17-17 prior to Western Illinois finishing on an 8-3 run to force GW's second straight five-set match to open the weekend.
Set 5: GW 21, Western Illinois 19
• An incredible back-and-forth final set culminated in both teams fighting off match point after match point.
• GW trailed 14-12 but roared back to take a 15-14 edge after a kill from Dozie-Nnamah, a block from Young and Clark, and a kill from Iott.
• Forced beyond regulation, GW saw three match points of their own go by the wayside before finally securing the victory at 21-19 thanks to an Iott kill and a block from Clark and Dozie-Nnamah.
• The Colonials have now won six straight five-set matches dating back to 2017.
Match 2: Bradley 3, GW 1
Key Stats
• GW promptly surpassed the attack percentage from Saturday's first match by hitting a a season-best .211 (56k-22e-161a) against the Braves.
• The match was even on most fronts with Bradley holding a fine edge in kills (58-56) and assists (54-53), while GW finished on top in blocks (8.0-4.0) and digs (78-77). The main difference proves to be aces, where the Braves topped the Colonials, 10-1.
• Lete re-established her career high in kills with 11, hitting .409 (11k-2e-22a) on the night.
• Iott (21 kills, 11 digs) and Lee (49 assists, 12 digs) finished the weekend by posting double-doubles in all three games. Both have now done so in four straight affairs.

Set 1: Bradley 25, GW 21
• The Braves quickly jumped out to a 5-0 lead, only to see the Colonials rally to take an 8-7 edge on the back of an 8-2 run.
• From there, the teams battled back and forth before Bradley broke off a 9-1 run to grab a 23-16 advantage.
• Both teams played rather clean in the opening stanza with Bradley owning a .326 (16k-2e-43a) to .263 (14k-4e-38a) benefit in attack percentage.
Set 2: GW 25, Bradley 21
• The Colonials returned the favor by garnering an early three-point lead at 7-4 after consecutive Bradley attack errors.
• After a tie at 7-7, Young and Iott tallied consecutive kills to put GW up for the rest of the set.
• Iott was a force in the Colonials evening the match, recording seven of her team-best 21 kills in the second stanza.
Set 3: Bradley 25, GW 11
• Bradley started on a 5-0 spurt and never looked back, finishing the set on a 15-6 run to take the third stanza in convincing fashion.

• In yet another set that required extra time, the Colonials and Braves oscillated with 14 ties and five lead changes.
• Neither team led by more than four, which came early in the set when GW had a 7-3 lead.
• Trailing 23-20, the Colonials ripped off four straight points on kills by Young and Iott and a pair of attack errors.
• GW fought off a pair of match points, countering each time with a Clark kill. However, the Braves recorded consecutive kills after the set was tied 26-26 to walk away with a four-set triumph.
