Sport: Golf Event: Navy Spring Invitational
The GW golf team captured its first victory since the 2012 Atlantic 10 Championship when it won the Navy Spring Invitational on Sunday. Senior Jack Porcelli led the way by taking the individual title.
The Colonials overcame a nine-shot deficit by turning in a final round of 305, which was the best round of the day by six shots. Towson, which led GW by nine coming into the round, turned in a 323 to finish tied for second with a 613 total. The Colonials, who shot 299 in the first round, ended up nine shots clear with a 604.
Porcelli earned his first career victory with a 5-over 147 total that left him two shots clear of second-place finisher Owen Quinn of Lehigh. The senior from Princeton, New Jersey, opened with a 71 on Saturday and was in a three-way tie for the lead going into Sunday. He turned in a final-round 76, while the two golfers he shared the lead with shot 79 and 83.
Also turning in top-five finishes for the Colonials were Christian Cichan and Adrian Castagnola, who both shot 9-over 151 to finish tied for fourth. Vince Palazzolo helped spur the Sunday comeback by turning in a 75, which matched the lowest score in the field in round two.
