ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The GW golf team erased a nine-shot deficit in the final round of the Navy Spring Invitational to capture its first team victory since the 2012 Atlantic 10 Championship, with senior Jack Porcelli leading the way by taking the individual title.
Rain and cool temperatures made for difficult scoring conditions in Sunday's final round, but the Colonials took advantage by turning in a 305 which was the best round of the day by six shots. Towson, which led GW by nine coming into the round after shooting 290 on Saturday, turned in a 323 to finish tied for second with a 613 total. The Colonials, who shot 299 in the first round, ended up nine shots clear with a 604.
Porcelli earned his first career victory with a 5-over 147 total that left him two shots clear of second-place finisher Owen Quinn of Lehigh. The senior from Princeton, New Jersey, opened with a 71 on Saturday and was in a three-way tie for the lead going into Sunday. He turned in a final round 76 while the two golfers he shared the lead with shot 79 and 83.
Also turning in top-five finishes for the Colonials were Christian Cichan and Adrian Castagnola, who both shot 9-over 151 to finish tied for fourth. Vince Palazzolo helped spur the Sunday comeback by turning in a 75 which matched the lowest score in the field in round two.
GW now turns its attention to the Atlantic 10 Championship, which returns to Grand Cypress Golf Club in Orlando for the third consecutive year. The Colonials will look to improve on their fourth-place finish a year ago when the tournament gets underway on April 28.
