WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The GW golf team closed the Kingsmill Intercollegiate with its lowest round of the week to finish in a tie for 10th amongst a crowded 24-team field on Tuesday at the Kingsmill Resort River Course.
Led by freshman Clifford Thompson, GW combined to shoot a 294 in the final round on Tuesday to move a couple spots up the leaderboard after entering the day in 12th. The Colonials shot a 301 in round one and 296 in round two, before Thompson helped lead the charge on the final day.
A native of Broederstroom, South Africa, Thompson turned in the lowest round of his young career with a 3-under par 67 on Tuesday to finish tied for 26th. After stumbling out of the gate with an 80 on Sunday, he responded well with a 74 on Monday and then shaved another seven strokes off on Tuesday to record the second-lowest round of the day in the 127-man field.
Thompson's scorecard featured five birdies and just one blemish, a double bogey on the par-4 18th, which was his 10th hole of the day. He bounced back to close with seven pars and a birdie to finish as the top Colonial for the second tournament in a row, following a T-31st finish two weeks ago at the Colleton River Collegiate.
Southern Illinois took home both the team and individual titles, finishing with a score of 22-over par 862. Peyton Wilhoit was the only player in the field to finish under par with a 2-under 208 (74-68-66).
The Colonials return to action on Monday, April 2, at Chambers Bay Golf Club in Seattle.
