Women's Basketball Bows Out of NCAA Tournament

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 14 seed George Washington women's basketball team knew it had a tall task ahead of it in the first round of the NCAA Tournament against the No. 3 seed and Big Ten champion Ohio State Buckeyes. A late-season run that included four straight wins to capture the Atlantic 10 Championship came to an end in the first round of the Big Dance in an 87-45 loss to Ohio State at St. John Arena in Columbus.
Not lost in the final score is the everlasting contributions made on the program by the graduating class of four-year seniors Brianna Cummings, Kelli Prange and Camila Tapias. The trio concludes their careers after helping the Colonials to 97 wins over the past four seasons with three NCAA Tournament appearances, four postseason trips, three A-10 regular-season titles and three A-10 Tournament Championships.
All three left their mark in Saturday's finale. Cummings finished with a team-high 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting in addition to five rebounds, three steals and an assist. The performance punctuates the finest season of her career during which she scored her 1,000th career point and captured postseason honors from the Atlantic 10 with spots on the All-Conference Third Team and All-Defensive Team. She was also named the Most Outstanding Player of the A-10 Championship.
Prange, the A-10's Sixth Woman of the Year, also eclipsed 1,000 career points earlier this season and finished with eight points and two rebounds in her collegiate finale, while Tapias hit a three-pointer and grabbed two rebounds to close out the finest season of her career.
Neila Luma went toe-to-toe with a physical Buckeyes' front court to finish with 12 points and seven rebounds before fouling out of the game in the fourth quarter after playing 34 minutes.
Classmate Chyna Latimer contributed three assists, two rebounds and two points in 12 minutes off the bench while Lexus Levy showed promise in eight minutes of reserve work.
GW's defensive effort was able to contain the NCAA's third-ranked all-time leading scorer Kelsey Mitchell to just 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting, but Mitchell's seven assists opened the door for three of her teammates to finish in double figures, led by Stephanie Mavunga's game-high 22 points (9-of-12 FG) and 13 rebounds.
Ohio State advances to play Central Michigan, winners over LSU in the first game on Saturday, in Monday's Second Round with a berth to the Sweet 16 on the line.
