Latimer contributes team-high nine points
TAMPA, Fla. – GW women's basketball has found no shortage of top-tier opponents in the early portion of the 2018-19 season, and Sunday was no exception facing a South Florida squad that was receiving votes in both national polls and was ranked to begin the season.
The Bulls represented the second straight, and fifth team so far, that were a part of the top 100 in the RPI. The Colonials held their own on the defensive end, holding USF 10 points below its season average, but were unable to get the offense in gear in a 63-30 setback at the Yuengling Center.
Sophomore Chyna Latimer came off the bench to lead GW with a season-high nine points and four rebounds in her most extensive action since the early part of the campaign. Redshirt-sophomore Oliva Gumbs added four points and six boards with fellow sophomore Neila Luma contributing seven points and four rebounds.
Senior Kelsi Mahoney hit the lone three-pointer for GW, marking the 30th consecutive game she has hit at least one triple.
The Colonials held USF to 15 points or fewer in the first three quarters before the Bulls got their offense clicking with 22 points in the fourth quarter while shooting 64 percent. Prior to the fourth, GW had held South Florida to 38 percent shooting, including 27 percent in the third quarter.
The strong defensive effort marked the eighth time in 10 games that GW has held its opponent below its season scoring average. The Bulls' top scorer, Laura Ferreira, was limited to just three points, the eighth time this year the opposition's top threat was restricted under her average.
Beatriz Jordao and Enna Pehadzic picked up the slack for USF, contributing 14 a piece.
The Colonials also held their own on the boards for the majority of the contest against the nation's No. 6 rebounding team in terms of margin. GW held USF without an offensive rebound for the first 16 minutes of the game and ultimately allowed just 10 second-chance points to the Bulls.
GW will now take an 11-day break for final exams before finishing up its non-conference slate with three games in 12 days around the holidays. The Buff & Blue welcome Mercer to the Smith Center on Friday, Dec. 21 at noon before traveling to William & Mary on Dec. 29 and hosting Memphis on New Year's Day.
