Mahoney hits three triples to pace GW with 12 points
WASHINGTON - The gauntlet of early-season conference-favorite opponents for GW women's basketball came to a close on Wednesday night at the Charles E. Smith Center, as after splitting a pair of games at James Madison and home vs. Princeton - both predicted to win their respective conference - the Colonials welcomed Big Ten favorite Maryland to DC.
A good start for GW had the Colonials with an early four-point lead, but Maryland's size and relentlessness won out. GW was able to hold the athletic Maryland squad to nearly twenty points below their scoring average entering the game (87.5 ppg), with a defense that limited the Terrapins to 2-of-16 successful attempts from three-point range, while connecting on five triples in their own right, highlighted by senior walk-on and former manager Anna Savino's first career bucket from deep.
Senior Kelsi Mahoney topped GW with 12 points, while 5-foot, 6-inch dynamo Mei-Lyn Bautista ripped down a team-high eight rebounds from her point guard position. The Colonials also matched Maryland on their respective offensive glass with 13 boards apiece.
Brianna Fraser led Maryland with 16 points off the bench in the eventual 69-30 win for the visitors to the Nation's Capital.
Up next for GW is a Sunday trip to Iona for a 1 p.m. tip-off on ESPN+, before a Thanksgiving sojourn to Cancun, Mexico. The Colonials face Georgia Tech on Thanksgiving Day in the Cancun Challenge at 4 p.m., before seeing #17 NC State the next day, also at 4 p.m.
GW returns home on Nov. 27th to host Towson at 7 p.m.
