WASHINGTON â€" The George Washington women's soccer squad earned their second straight shutout victory by defeating Towson, 1-0, on Thursday evening at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
Junior midfielder Sofia Pavon cemented the GW victory with a shot from behind the box in the 51st minute. The Tigers had an offensive second half surge, but the GW defense held strong to close out the matchup. Goalkeeper Miranda Horn made six saves between the pipes and notched her second straight shutout win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 51st Minute â€" Sofia Pavon broke the deadlock when she scored her second goal of the season. The Chicago, Illinois native put the Colonials out front when she weaved past the Tigers defense and found the back of the net with a shot from right behind the box. (GW 1, TOWSON 0)
NOTEWORTHY
- Pavon led the Colonials with four shots on goal, while senior Brittany Cooper had two of her own. The duo leads the team with 13 and 12 shots, respectively.
- With today's victory, Miranda Horn earned the 23rd shutout of her career. The Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, native needs five more clean sheets to take first place on the all-time career records list.
- Freshmen Allie Nornes and Alexis Williams lead all newcomers with five starts this season.
- Junior Caitlin Sullivan came into the game with six minutes to play in the second half. The midfielder from Lake Ridge, Virginia brought fresh legs to the field and had two breakaway scoring chances in the final minutes of the game.
