WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's tennis team is set to compete at the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship as the No. 9 seed from April 26-30 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
The Colonials (11-9) have had a strong spring under the direction of first-year head coach Torrie Browning, notching the most wins in a season since the 2013 squad's 11 victories.
Four-time defending champion VCU will play as the top seed and Massachusetts will compete as the No. 2 seed - both squads will receive a first-round bye. Fordham received the No. 3 seed, followed by Davidson (4th), Saint Louis (5th), Dayton (6th), Duquesne (7th), and Richmond (8th). The Colonials are seeded above George Mason (10th), Rhode Island (11th), Saint Joseph's (12th), St. Bonaventure (13th) and La Salle (14th).
GW will begin Championship play on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. against No. 8 Richmond. With a win, the Colonials would face VCU in the quarterfinal round.
A year ago, the Colonials made a deep run to the Championship semifinals as the seventh seed, upsetting second-seeded Massachusetts in the quarterfinals.
Newcomers have made a strong impact for the Colonials this season, led by sophomore and top singles player Maria Siopacha, who owns a team-best 13-7 spring record in her first season in the Buff and Blue. Freshman Melis Bayraktaroglu, playing at Nos. 2-3 singles, and junior newcomer Kamilla Beisenova, playing flights 5-6, each have a 9-8 spring solo record.
Seniors Taylor Nederlander and Allison Hansen provide leadership and experience for a young squad, returning for their fourth Championship appearance.
For the first time ever, the Championship will be live streamed, with the final broadcast on ESPN3.
The A-10 Championship is a 14-team single elimination tournament. The winner will receive the conference's automatic bid to compete in the NCAA Team Tournament. The title match is slated for Sunday, April 30, at 10 a.m.
